Diversity in Student Life, a narrative

Posted: Nov 27, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

There is nothing more satisfying in life than success. The moment of victory is always special and remains in the memory lane for eternity. My achievements, similarly, have been the most treasured moments of my life. I hope there are many more such moments in store for me, but one thing that has been responsible for bestowing in on me these cherished times has been my desire to explore; my love for diversity.

I remember as a child I used to envy Imran Khan; I used to long for the time when I could also celebrate victory the way Imran did in 1992 when he lifted the World Cup. This wish did come true over time, infact I have seen this dream materialize more than once in my life. At times, this wish came true in form of academic success, other wise in form of extra-curricular achievements. Diversity is dear to me because my strings of achievements would have been too nominal only if I would have not added dimensions to my involvements in and out of school. The trophy cabinet in my room is, at least for me, the most satisfying and pleasing site, courtesy my efforts as a debater, a student, an actor and as a sports man. I do realize that there is still a long way to go, and there is much more to explore in life, but it's gratifying to know that I have availed all the opportunities that have come my way so far, and have the ability to gain from the many more that are in store for me.

However, it is not only the glory of success or the greed for a larger trophy cabinet that propels me to experiment with my range; there is much more beyond success and failure that these activities have gifted me that force me to continue with them. My career as a debater spans over 5 years, and in this time I was not always winning; but I was, certainly, always learning and evolving-as an individual-with every second that was devoted to the art of public speaking. My articulation in English improved rapidly, fear to face an audience perished away and I could sense a more confident, more determined self, developing within me. Debating compelled me to enhance my knowledge about global affairs and develop a keen insight on political, economic and social issues around the world. Patience, tolerance with regard to the view of others and appreciation of others' perspectives and ideas crept into me with time. It taught me that failure is not the end; failure is a mentor which can guide you to success in the future. I didn't win a single debate during my first year of debating, but I didn't lose heart and marched-on by extracting lessons from failure. These changes though important for character building would have remained at bay from me if I had stitched my-self with my books; academics are dear to me, but all that I just mentioned is something no curriculum, at least in Pakistan, could have taught me. My education would not have made sense if I would not have changed my-self for good; changes which activities such as debating brought within me.

My experiences as a debater serve as a basic and crude example to how multi-dimensional thinking and activities can contribute in ones well-being. Apart from these apparent gains diversity entrenches within you elements you might not notice at first, but you recognize their significance over time. Our globe is full of richness; in terms of culture, values and lifestyles. Today's young generation needs a wider horizon to understand the subtleties of the diverse cultures and religions that exist in the world. This is significant because this globe has become a smaller place to live-in, this inter-twined global community can survive and evolve from where it stands today if we become more welcoming and tolerant towards novel ideas and thoughts. We need to develop the vigor and character to acknowledge beliefs that contradict ours and socialize without discriminating; we need to be greedy for knowing more about the world around us. This necessity to cultivate our minds, with all the colors of the world, converges down to one basic element; diversity.

The human mind is not a hardwired machine. The day we are born till the day we die we ‘form' and model our thoughts and structure our mind-set. It is imperative that this process of carving-out our mind from the organ called brain does not suffer from a dearth of ideas. Diversity is the key to shower those ideas onto us that can aid u in structuring ‘the human mind'. Therefore, yes, life experiences, activities and ideas add much to the educational mix, by not only making education more purposeful but also by equipping us with the tools that can help us realize our dreams. I am reminded of this every day; when I look at the Imran Khan poster in my room!
