Dutch Student Set On Fire During Routine Hazing Ritual
A student from the Northern Dutch city of Groningen was set on fire last week during a group outing which formed part of an official hazing process. The incident took place at a small island near the province called Giethoorn.
The student received sever burns from the incident however the hazing was to continue. Only 40 hours later was he allowed to receive medical help from his injuries carrying a large wound on his back the entire time.
The initial idea was was for him and his four class mates to undertake a hazing where only 4 hours of sleep per day was allowed. Later on, the student had to wear a Santa Claus costume after when he personally asked his fellow students to light him on fire. They started to cover him in flammable liquid and lit him shortly thereafter.
According to the police, there was an immediate fireball that appeared as the engulfed student ran his way into the nearby water.
When the victim finally allowed them to check his wounds, they were hardly surprised to find second and third degree burns on around 6% of his back. He will probably remain the rest of the evening in the hospital.
After the interrogation, the victim refused to have his mates prosecuted. His parents have done this for him instead. They wish to know the truth about this case and close it off. The other three students are to be interrogated very soon.
The fraternity were appalled to hear the news. "We just can't believe that someone can think of such an activity". They have nevertheless received sanctions against their actions. "We hope the young man will heal as soon as possible", they mentioned further.
The University of Groningen are undertaking research into the incident in an effort to find out what really happened and to enforce some form of punishment against the responsible individuals.
