Earn Up To 12 Foreign Language Credit with CLEP

Posted: Jul 13, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Most college degree plans require a heavy dose of foreign language. Students become bogged down for semesters on end, struggling to earn those hours of foreign language credit.

But there's an easier way! The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) offers 33 exams in a variety of subjects, including foreign language. The CLEP program offers 6 foreign language exams: French 1 and 2, Spanish 1 and 2, and German 1 and 2. Passing these CLEP foreign language exams earns the student tons of college credit.

For instance, by passing both Level 1 and 2 of the Spanish CLEP test, the student can earn up to 12 hours of college credit. And there are nearly 3,000 colleges that accept CLEP credit for their foreign language requirements. A student can determine whether her particular college accepts CLEP credit by clicking on the "CLEP college search" link on the CollegeBoard's website (http://www.collegeboard.com/clep).

When it comes to meeting foreign language requirements, CLEP saves not only time; it saves a ton of money too. That's because each CLEP test costs only $77. Tuition for the equivalent course at a college or university would cost much more. And that's not even counting the cost of books. The required books for college courses can set a student back hundreds of dollars. With CLEP, there are no required books. The student studies at his own pace, with whatever materials he chooses, in whatever manner he wants.

Of course, when it comes to foreign language, many students won't have to study at all in order to pass a CLEP exams. These foreign languages are the native tongues of many students or they have grown up in bilingual homes, and they possess equal proficiency in both English and a foreign language. What a silly waste of time for such students to sit through hours of foreign language class in order to meet a degree requirement! A bilingual student should be able to pass a CLEP foreign language exam with ease.

On the other hand, many students who are only fluent in English will need to put in many hours of foreign language studying in order to pass a CLEP exam. Students who need to brush up on their foreign language knowledge have the option to study alone, study with a group, or study with the help of a test-prep program. Both brick-and-mortar as well as online CLEP prep programs specialize in helping students study for CLEP exams.

So, if you need foreign language credit for your degree plan (and who doesn't?), go to the CollegeBoard's website and check out the descriptions for their foreign language CLEP exams. Make sure that your college accepts CLEP credit, and then register for the test of your choice. Then, start studying! After you've earned a dozen or so hours of foreign language credit in a short amount of time, you'll be glad that you took those CLEP exams. CLEP foreign language exams can propel you much closer to your goal of earning a college degree.
