As the number of aspirants of engineering, technology and management increasing considering the number of institutions are also providing facilities to their students since Independence. Whereas in India there were about 45 engineering colleges only at the time of Independence and total intake capacity of near about 2600, on August 2007 and now there were about 1700 AICTE approved engineering institutes and still going on increasing.
Admissions to the Engineering degree level programs are totally based on the performance of candidates in a there competitive exam they appeared. For the B.Tech and the Dual Degree programs the criteria is performance in the Entrance Exam. The number of students registered for it has increased from near about thousands in 1990 now about up to millions in 2011. During this period, the total under-graduate seats at engineering institutes also have increased.
Since the number of applicants is increasing at higher rates than the number of seats, this percentage has been declining. The low percentage has resulted in a coaching class industry that thrives on training students for various engineering entrance exams. While the increasing number of engineering colleges in country offering degree level courses in the last few years also opened the door for accelerating growth of trained manpower pool for the economy, challenges of increasing entrance with impartiality, reducing regional inequity, and increasing and pledges quality of assistance continue to remain areas of foremost concern.

Accreditation agencies, the Universities themselves through an internal mechanism, which included among others the following, assured the responsibility of ensuring the quality of education imparted by Institutions/Departments under the jurisdiction of Universities:
• Visit to the Institutions by an expert team for ensuring adequate facilities for imparting education.
• Review of proposal by a Peer group.
• Curriculum control through University Academic Council.
• Performance evaluation of students through University Examination Examinations.
• Prescribing the qualifications for teachers.
• Ensuring through regulations the educational attainments of students at the time of admissions.
• Linking grant of public funds to institutional performance.
The Government, the AICTE and the engineering educational community of India are fully aware for the challenges and some proactive actions have already taken for it. Building physical infrastructure where desirable and the quality issue needs major efforts and potential of educational institutions, research laboratories and industry and policy planners in removing barricades to achieving excellence.
