As an educator & a former college student myself I am able to help students with the application process for college, in most facets. But one thing I will never understand is why students always make the mistake of immediately applying for a student loan, when there is so much available to them. They just aren't utilizing what is available to them.
I've stressed obtaining scholarships whether local, from their job or simply ones they've found searching the world wide web. One thing I forgot to mention to them was the FAFSA. The FAFSA is a Free Application For Student Aid. And it is exactly what it sounds like it is.
Students & parents should fill out the FAFSA online together, as a lot of information will be needed such as date of birth & social security number. In order to file the FAFSA you will also need to submit your & your parent's financial information. Essentially they want the information from the previous year's tax return. This helps them determine what aid is available to you.
Upon completion of the FAFSA you will be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR) spelling out what is available to you. Make sure you've filled out the FAFSA properly, because if you don't (especially the financial information) the SAR will simply state your information is wrong & ask you to fix it. Also make sure if you've chosen your college to use their appropriate code when filling out the FAFSA, as that could result in more aid.
The process is rather simple. Upon proper completion the SAR will tell you what you're eligible for. In some instances it will note government loans that you will have to pay back, which are just the same as you'd file for yourself through Sallie Mae for example. But what you hope to receive are grants, which are government funded money for college that never have to be paid back. The most common grant for education is called the Pell grant.
Some people pass up the opportunity because they feel that their parents income will preclude them from receiving anything of note. That is not the case. Most people with two income obtaining parents will still have some kind of aid available to them. That is of course, assuming your parents aren't Bill & Linda Gates.
