GD-PI FAQs: Answers from IIM-A, C, L, K students
The GD, PI and Essay Writing rounds are going to begin at IIMs and other leading B-schools by the end of this month. To help the GD-PI call getters MBAUniverse.com recently held a series of Live Chats with IIM students, who guided the shortlisted candidates on the ways to conquer the crucial rounds.
The IIM students, who took the initiative to answer the questions of the aspirants on Live Chat, were: Ashwin Gurunathan, IIM Lucknow; Ishan Mahajan, IIM Calcutta; Ranjan Panda, IIM Kozhikode; Pratik Mukherjee, Rohit Gupta, Rahul Madhavan, all from IIM Ahmedabad.
Today, we bring to you the answers to the questions that were most frequently raised by call getters from across the country during the live chat:
Q: Communication is the biggest problem for me. I lack communication skills. Please suggest me how I can develop the communication skills?
A: I think your best bet is to take a lot of mock GDs and in each, consciously note what is hampering your performance. After the GD, try to analyze how you could have done better. Some people believe that talking with yourself in front of the mirror helps. Try asking friends to help you out.
(Answered by Rohit Gupta, IIM Ahmedabad)
Though communication is an essential aspect, it is not the deciding factor, according to me. If you are structured in your thoughts and are able to successfully convey your thoughts to the GD panel, that will do it. Flamboyant use of English language is not needed as long as you are able to communicate clearly.
(Answered by Ashwin Gurunathan, IIM Lucknow)
Q: What is the correct way to start a GD so that it will create a good impression on the panelists?
A: There is no correct or wrong way per se. Suffice to say that normal conversation etiquettes apply. You must not shout or be frantic. Just put your point across in clear, crisp words and let the discussion take its course. If your logic is sound, the judges surely take notice.
(Answered by Rohit Gupta, IIM Ahmedabad)
Q: If GD is running in a very loud manner and I am not able to speak loud and be aggressive, what should I do?
A: Mock GDs are in no way a simulation of real GDs. In the real GD, people would be much calmer since the atmosphere too is different. You can smile at the person and politely try to change the topic, if someone is loud or aggressive.
(Answered by Ranjan Panda, IIM Kozhikode)
Q: How to proceed for essay writing? What is the duration of essay writing at IIM-A?
A: Based on previous years' experiences, here is my take on the essay writing:
1. Topics can vary from anything on current affairs to abstract topics. Read up the current issues, as much as possible. Analyze what you read and form your own views.
2. There are no choices.
3. Duration could be around 10 minutes.
(Answered by Pratik Mukherjee, IIM Ahmedabad)
