Gender plays a very important role in any society; it shapes how a person is treated and the expectations that are associated with a specific gender are very distinct. This is particularly the case from where I come. I was born and raised in Pakistan and had more or less a traditional upbringing from or cultural point of view. In Pakistani society gender plays a very important role.
From when a child is born or sometimes even before that, parents, especially mothers anticipate their children's birth with mixed emotions. Even in this day and age boys are preferred then girls and the joy and celebration at the birth of a boy are much more enthusiastic when compared to a girl, because traditionally a girl is considered to a liability as the parents to think about her future, her dowry and even taking care of her, as girls are raised in a more protective environment with rules and regulations. Boys on the other hand from the very beginning are considered to be future pillars of a family and given a special kind of treatment, which is in some cases is quite subtle in others very obvious.
In my case, although I come from a traditional family but I was not given special treatment explicitly, but from the very beginning I always played with gender specific toys like cars and encouraged to play sports especially Cricket which is very popular in Pakistan, and urged to play with boys then with girls, even my cousins and sisters, as we have large extended families.
