Heavy Equipment Operator Schools - Steps to Certification

Posted: Mar 18, 2011 |

The use of heavy machinery to help complete a construction project is a necessity. Through vocational programs focused on teaching how to run heavy machinery students can step into the industry ready for work. Students can find the right program by fully understanding their options and knowing the standard requirements to enter work as a heavy equipment operator. There are certain steps to certification for heavy equipment operator schools that students can follow.

The work included incorporates the use of heavy equipment to propel a construction project forward. Machinery used includes bulldozers, tractors, cranes, excavators, and more. Students can learn how to completely function inside the field by completing an educational program.

Understanding the career is a good preliminary step to making an informed decision on whether or not to enter an educational program. Inside the field of construction heavy equipment professionals work to constantly manage, fix, and operate the industry's machines. The majority of the work is conducted on construction sites where workers finish varying tasks according to the project being handled. Formal education is often required and students can follow a two-step process to gain the needed knowledge.

*Step One: Complete a Certificate Program

Certificate programs are the primary educational option available inside vocational training schools. Several certificate options exist, which mainly include one to three month programs. Students can expect to learn through classroom based and real-world experience lab courses. Courses focus on providing students with the knowledge to handle and maintain heavy equipment machines. Classroom based topics cover construction safety, earth moving, and basic surveying. Inside real-world application courses students complete training based on equipment maneuvering and repairing procedures. Specific study on tractors, loaders, backhoes, graders, and more is also covered inside a certificate program.

*Step Two: Gain Commercial Driver's License

Most educational programs have students gain a commercial driver's license or CDL upon completion of a certificate program. The purpose of this licensure is to ensure that students have the appropriate knowledge of the technical and practical skills needed to successfully operate heavy equipment. To obtain licensure students have to complete a comprehensive exam that covers driving safety and maneuvering regulations.

Along with this licensure students will also be certified in heavy equipment operation by completing an exam set forth by the National Center for Construction Education and Research. This is highly beneficial because students are able to prove that they have the adequate knowledge required to complete all necessary functions handled inside the career. Working to complete this two-step process shows employers that applicants are fully capable of handling all work related duties in regards to construction and equipment driving.

Although formal education is not required it is becoming the standard that employers use to hire new employees. Students should take this into consideration when pursuing a career as a heavy equipment operator. Formal education does not require a long-term commitment so students should strongly consider entering a certificate program. Start education now and become a certified heavy equipment operator by enrolling in a program approved by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) for full accreditation.
