History of Online Degree Programs

Online degree programs are a growing component of distance learning, which includes education completed outside the classroom environment such as correspondence courses and video lectures. Distance learning has been in existence for years. According to the United States Distance Learning Association, 39 universities offered correspondence courses by 1930 to allow education to be more accessible to students living around the country.

President Obama has declared that adults will need an education beyond a high school diploma in order to stay competitive in the changing economy’s workforce. Distance learning allows working students to balance taking classes and completing assignments with their demanding job schedules. Another appeal of online degree programs is that their tuition costs are often less than those associated with obtaining a traditional university education.

Advances in computer technology have resulted in the evolution of distance learning to include online degree programs. The United States Distance Learning Association reported that in 1993, Jones International University in Colorado became the first online accredited university to launch. The Online Education Database now contains reviews of over 1,000 online degree programs offered at 89 accredited online colleges in the country. Students are earning online undergraduate and post graduate degrees in fields including Education, Business, Human Resources, Nursing and Engineering.

More students are taking advantage of the increasing number of distance learning programs being offered. According to U.S. News & World Report, less than two million students enrolled in at least one online class in 2003. In 2008, enrollment increased to over 4 million in online courses. Some ivy league schools have even started allowing students to audit classes online. However, U.S. News & World Report noted that there are employers who are skeptical about hiring applicants with online degrees.

Online degree programs are becoming more common as they address many students need for more affordable and flexible ways to earn an education in today’s economy.
