How to Become a Coroner

If you're wondering how to become a coroner, you are probably a unique type of person, as it takes a certain kind of individual to do this job and do it well. Coroners have an incredible responsibility – they determine the cause of death when a person has passed away, listing the official cause on the death certificate. When murder is a possibility this is an especially important task. Having the responsibility to determine whether a death was an accident, homicide or suicide is a big deal – are you up for the challenge?

The first step to becoming a coroner is to find out what the job requirements are in your local area. Talk to a coroner, or check with your state government and find out what the levels of preparation are for your city, county or region. Then you can decide whether this job is right for you, and if so, begin preparing yourself. Many coroners start out by pursuing a criminal justice degree, while others follow state-run training programs. Some coroners have degrees in medicine or law, and many of them are pathologists or doctors. Since the job will often require you to move in both the legal and medical worlds, an expertise in both areas is a plus. Skills in analyses and communication will also help.

Networking is a big part of succeeding as a coroner. You will need to meet people who work in this field and get as much experience as you can, using the opportunity to establish your character and build your reputation as an honest and hard working individual. This is just as important as having the education that is comparable to other coroners in your area. You will need to be able to lead and manage others, but you'll also need to work well with teams that include both technicians and doctors all striving to solve the problems at hand.

If you have what it takes to become a successful coroner, you can do quite well for yourself. With salaries ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 annually there is plenty of room to make good money once you have some experience.
