How to Pursue a Career in Aromatherapy

Obtaining holistic therapy as a form of health care has become a popular industry with more individuals seeking out non-surgical medical treatment. Students that want to learn how to pursue a career in aromatherapy and enter the natural healing industry have multiple schooling options. One possible area of study is aromatherapy.

As an aromatherapist professional's utilize natural oils to positively influence the health of their patients. When pursuing an education students need to know what training programs are available and what requirements the professional industry has for aromatherapy. Once the information is gathered students can then obtain the right level of training for their goals and enter careers. Students can start pursuing careers in aromatherapy by completing specific steps. Working through steps will help students make each area of pursuing careers more manageable.

As a first step, students should research the available educational training opportunities. Most programs that are exclusively dedicated to aromatherapy are offered at natural healing colleges. Certificate and associates degree programs are the two main training levels provided. Students will obtain specific training that focuses on how to use oils for healing purposes. Students that would like to obtain bachelors degrees can attend colleges and receive their education in integrative studies. This option provides students with a well-balanced understanding of alternative medicine, which includes aromatherapy.

Students may also complete programs in flower essences and spa aromatherapy. Students should also know what training requirements the industry has for aromatherapists. The field doesn't have specific licensing requirements. Obtaining an education is highly recommended and most professionals have at least certificates in aromatherapy. Optional licensure is available and very beneficial inside the job market. The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy offers licensure and requires students to have at least 200 hours of formal training to be eligible for the examination. Licensure tests student's knowledge of botany, chemical blending, and oil application.

After the appropriate knowledge of career expectations is gathered students can complete the most important step, obtaining an education. Inside these alternative healing certificate programs students learn how to apply oils and plant extracts to specific points on the body. The use of oils to stimulate a person's body and emotions is explored. The focus of education is to study the body's reaction to oils and scents. Coursework explores how the brain perceives the smell of different oils and scents. Course subjects typically include:

  • Scent Therapy
  • Emotional and Physical Stimulation
  • Blending Practices

Students that choose to enter associates degree programs will gain a more thorough understanding of the therapy. The philosophy and history behind aromatherapy is explored along with the best techniques. Core courses like human anatomy, chemistry, and physiology are required during training at this level. With a scientific foundation gained from these courses students can learn to use herbs and flowers to blend oils for therapy sessions. Other common course topics include iridology, homeopathy, sense therapy, and oil consumption are.

By completing these basic steps students will learn the needed skills to enter successful careers. Choose an accredited aromatherapy degree program to enroll in and start training to become an aromatherapist. The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork fully accredits programs that provide quality educational training.
