Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are most highly reputed centers for higher education in science and technology. IITs are a group of seven completely autonomous entities and are called the seven temples of Indian technological education. IITs are declared as the Institutes of National Importance by the government of India. Seven IITs are established in seven cities located across far regions of the country, namely, Delhi, Bombay, Chennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Roorki. These institutes have been set up under the Institutes of Technology act, 1963. The central administration of the IITs is carried on by an IIT Council.
