There are opportunities in one's lifetime that present themselves only because you have earned a college degree. What does it mean for someone with a college degree?

An Increased Knowledge Base

College teaches you to think rationally. It boosts your power to grasp developments in our fast changing world. It empowers you to independently evaluate the authority of information you here without counting on some endorsement of a so-called expert.

This educational experience helps you work with other professionals by taking what they say and come to your own conclusion. This skill is critical for individuals today.

A proper education will provide you the ability to articulate thoughts clearly in speech and in writing, and to make wise decisions. This will allow you to recognize rubbish when you read or hear it.

If you apply yourself, college will prepare you to learn on your own. Anyone with a bachelor's degree should be able to teach themselves whatever technical skills they may need. Education is about learning to think - learning different ways to analyze a problem and find a solution.

You Will Earn More Money

A degree will increase your earning potential substantially. Earning a degree is the fast track to a high-paying job. A person who attends college, as a rule, earns more than a person who does not. For example, as much as ten years ago, a person with a college degree from a four-year college earned over $18,000 more than a person who did not go to college. Even someone that has completed a two-year associate's degree earns more than the average high school graduate.

A Degree Provides A Brighter Future

A college education can help you become a responsible citizen by understanding of the community, the nation, and the world that you live in. In college you will be able to explore your interests, uncover things you never knew before, and give you time to consider your future goals.

A Degree Expands Life's Opportunities

We live in a constantly changing high-tech world. Our economy now relies more on brainpower than muscle power because of these changes. More jobs require education beyond high school. Your college degree gives you more jobs to choose from.

A college education is a minimum requirement of many professional jobs. A bachelor's degree is a minimum credential for teachers, engineers, and commissioned officers in the military. Many salaried jobs in large corporations with a formal hiring process look for at least a four-year degree.

Corporations routinely eliminate those applicants who don't have a four-year degree because they lacked the intellect or diligence to earn one. Corporations give preference to graduates with high grades. When the human resource office of a large corporation requires a bachelor's degree, they use colleges to help sort applicants for a job.

A bachelor's degree is required for admission to law school or medical school, which - in turn - is a prerequisite to becoming an attorney or physician. One purpose of a university is to prepare students for a future career in the learned professions such as law, medicine, engineering, science, scholarly research, and teaching.

The distinguishing feature of education for learned professions is that learned professionals think from first principles not by memorizing, not by quoting either dogma or authorities, not by copying from handbooks. Employers know an educated person usually is creative, and knows more than one acceptable way to solve a particular problem.

A college education will teach you fundamentals that will never go out of fashion. These fundamentals include the ability to read well, thinking critically, improve your ability to write concise. It gives you the ability to find information, to sort and shift it and then to teach yourself.
