COME is an association of unaided management institutes offering PGDM programmes. Dr. Palkar is also the Director of Sinhgad Institute of Management and Computer Application, Pune.
Dr. Palkar tells how a PGDM programme is equivalent to MBA, and perhaps much better.
"PGDM programme is a unique initiative in Higher Business Management Education, which has its foundation on autonomy and is tailor made to meet the industry requirement," says Dr. Palkar. Read further for her insights:
Course
PGDM institutes offer a wide spectrum of courses that are specific to certain sectors/vertical specific. Most of the courses are designed keeping in view the manpower projections made by industry with a long term perspective. The MBA programmes are more compartmentalized by functions as against that PGDM institutes offer functional specialization as also specific sector-oriented programmes.
Content /Syllabus/Pedagogy
PGDM programmes contents have a close relevance to the practice as the institutes have to ensure that the students are industry ready with innovative teaching practices.
A lot of PGDM academic board has a mix of academicians and industry members and the frequency of updation of the syllabi is higher, as against the University system MBA that has the Members of Board of studies predominantly academicians and the syllabus revision in many Universities is done once in 3-5 years.
Given the changing economic scenario and the ever changing Business landscape MBA grads from the university system lack the updation expected by the industry. But, of course there are exceptions, some University institutes/Departments take special care to improve the knowledge content base of the student by providing Value added inputs beyond the curriculum. These can be counted on fingers – JBIMS, FMS and others.
Branding and Equity
The MBA programmes attract the students on the credibility of the University that they represent. Today the best of the thought leaders in Business Education are out of the purview of the University pattern and run autonomous PGDM programmes that drive the industry expertise in the teaching learning process along with a rich pool of involved academicians.
The equity of PGDM brand is the reflection of the output that has basic components of course /content/delivery/industry interface and most importantly the industry placements.
Even the emerging players in PGDM are striving hard to meet the benchmarks created by academic leader institutes. Every PGDM institute's existence and future is the outcome of the individual efforts and credibility that is its sole identity made on personal vision of the promoting body as against the University MBA that piggy banks on the parent University and its created equity with very little or no individual effort in institution building.
Industry Acceptance
Industry acceptance to PGDM, not only the plain Business Administration but also the vertical specific specializations, have great industry acceptance as against the University MBA barring a few reputed Universities.
Industry looks at meeting its requirement and sees value in hiring graduates from Autonomous PGDM courses that are beyond the so called clutches of University/Government Policies of reservations and purely driven by merit irrespective of the caste and better teaching learning practices.
Innovative Practices
Such practices come by naturally and with ease in PGDM institutions that has little hierarchy in contrast to the University MBA that is driven by the mass base of various colleges/institutes in the region that has the baggage of some remote locations where getting quality faculty for offbeat/innovative/latest emerging practices is a challenges and hence many universities have to succumb to standards acceptable to an average institute but that is not what necessarily the industry requires.
