Brothers Jeremy, Adam and Joe Federico, the third generation of family-owned and operated Federico Beauty Institute (FBI), believe that volunteer efforts and supporting one's community are important to the success and growth of individuals as well as businesses.

Since the school's founding in 1946 by grandfather, James Federico, Federico Beauty Institute has provided a quality beauty education that is second to none, such as a superior Pivot Point International curriculum, advanced education classes, a staff of professional tenured educators, and a dedication to instilling in students and graduates a life-long commitment to continuing education.  But what other benefits set Federico apart from other top-notch beauty schools?  What makes Federico "More than a quality beauty education?"

Beyond a Traditional Beauty Education

The "More" that is available to all Federico students, falls under the umbrella of "Student Services" and includes the following student benefits:

  • FBI Student Externship Program
  • Lifetime Job Placement Assistance
  • Advanced Education Classes
  • Beauty Industry Events
  • Community Outreach

FBI Student Externship Program

(Sidebar):  In early 2009, 25 graduates participated in the Externship Program.

12 were hired for permanent jobs with their Externship salon or spa.

Gary Federico started the student externship program by assisting in the creation of the student externship bill that was passed by the California State Legislature.

The list of Sacramento area salons and spas that currently participate in the Federico Beauty Institute Student Externship Program currently numbers 45!

The voluntary Federico Beauty Institute Student Externship Program is designed to provide student externs practical salon/spa experience and exposure, while simultaneously attending cosmetology school. Participating salon/spas have the opportunity to work with Federico Beauty Institute's student services coordinator to individually recruit future employees from the school, as described below.

Many externship salons prefer to hire Federico students who have externed at their salons.  During externship, salon management is able to observe students as potential employees, working in a "real-world" retail environment and interacting with staff and clientele.

In an effort to make job hunting easier for Federico graduates, Jennifer maintains an industry Job Board on the FBI website.  Weekly, Jennifer updates job postings from area salons and spas.

Jennifer can also provide students with resume templates and can assist with resume writing tips and editing.  "Helping students find a career in their chosen industry is a top priority of mine," says Jennifer. "Our graduates have spent a lot of effort working for their dream career; it would be a shame to see that dream go unfulfilled."

 Advanced Classes

Under the direction of Adam Federico, owner/manager of AJF Salon in Sacramento and Artistic Director for Federico Beauty Institute, in-house advanced courses are available to senior students. "Few, if any, beauty school students have the opportunity to receive this caliber of specialized training while still in beauty school," says Jennifer. Additionally, Yolly ten Koppel, Interntational Artistic Director of Pivot Point International, has given Advanced Cutting Workshops, on the Federico campus, which qualifying students can attend.

Event Participation

Although community involvement and event participation are not required to graduate, most Federico students are happy to give their time and talent to assist with makeup application or hair styling for local benefit fashion shows, provide free back massages for concert goers, or perform free haircutting services for Vietnam veterans.

Jennifer also makes sure students are aware of the many local and national trade show events, where they can mingle and interact with business professionals from the industry.  An added benefit for students: they can earn hours toward the total time required to graduate from Federico Cosmetology and Esthetics Programs.

Community Outreach

(Sidebar)As an educational establishment, we believe it's important that our students receive a heightened sense of community and gain a better understanding of their place within society by participating in a variety of outreach activities where they are allowed to give their time and talent to the community." Through partnerships with community and industry, Federico students benefit greatly when they are able to "get out of the classroom and clinic environment and have rewarding experiences giving back to the community," says Jennifer.

Staying Connected

Jennifer also coordinates student Home Room. Home Room is the school's method of bridging the gap between school administration and student life.  Every week the entire student body comes together for announcements regarding future events, administrative announcements, and industry news.

Every other week, Jennifer invites a guest speaker to provide an educational presentation offering their working knowledge of the beauty industry, or to perform a demonstration of new product or salon/spa service.  Here is a sampling of the industry professionals who have presented as a guest speaker in 2009:

  • Angelina, owner of Deeda Salon, Seminar on Personal Image
  • Bob Shaw, Modern Salon Magazine, Seminar on the State of the Industry
  • Jacob Sillers, Proctor & Gamble, Sebastian "Flaunt" product education and launch
  • Grant Romundt, "Scissorboy", Promoting free educational "webisodes" available on his website

"I'm busy every minute of every workday working with students, our beauty partners and local salons and spas.  I firmly believe I have the best job around.  It's very rewarding to come to work everyday knowing that our students are getting  'the best of the best' beauty education," says Jennifer.
