Nurse Anesthetist Schools: Preparing Students for a Rewarding Career

Nurse anesthetist schools prepare students to work as nurse anesthetists. These are nurses who help administer anesthesia to patients. This position is actually an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has completed advanced levels of education and board certification.

You can expect nurse anesthetist schools to take at least forty-eight months if you are attending full-time. However, many people work full-time and go to school part-time. Often students work as a nurse while they pursue the Masters degree they need to be able to work as a nurse anesthetist.

The pay scale for nurse anesthetists is quite attractive. It is, in fact, the best paid nursing position out there. Nurse anesthetists closely monitor their patients before, during, and after the procedure they are undergoing. They play an important role in any procedure requiring anesthesia. Obstetrics has a big need for nurse anesthetists. But these nurses are also needed for dental procedures.

Nurse anesthetists get the equipment and supplies prepped for surgical procedures. They also analyze the tests run prior to the procedure to try to predict how the patient will respond to the anesthetic. They are responsible for making sure there is blood readily available if the patient were to need it. This is a position of tremendous responsibility. Monitoring vital signs of the patient is also part of the role of the nurse anesthetist. They serve as a liaison to the physician. They may be required to explain procedures to patients, who may be nervous and upset.

Characteristics that would serve a student as a nurse anesthetist are problem-solving ability, quick thinking, emotional evenness, and the ability to handle stressful situations well. Intelligence and a background in science are necessary as well.

Nurse anesthetist schools prepare you to work as a nurse anesthetist, which may mean that work independently or it could mean that you work under the supervision of a doctor or an anesthesiologist. The requirements vary from state to state. Some states allow nurse anesthetists to work alone and some require the supervision of a physician. No states specifically state that the supervision must be an anesthesiologist. The course of study for this program includes physiology, anatomy, physics, pathophysiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology. There are also clinicals for this program, which require the student to go into a real world setting and gain practical experience using anesthesia and the various techniques accompanying them.

Entry into nurse anesthetist schools is the first step toward attaining the higher education needed to become a nurse anesthetist. This is a rewarding career—both emotionally and financially. You get the opportunity to be highly responsible for patient care and to help improve a patient's experience during a procedure. While you are considering schools for this specialty, consider the following questions:

  • What is the class size?
  • Does the school offer job placement after graduation?
  • What is the rate of success for graduates getting their certification after graduation?

This is a career that offers much, including the opportunity to help others.
