Students can learn how to examine the human mental process and how its use in everyday interaction inside a psychology program. Students can enter a degree program by enrolling in an accredited college or university. Psychology degree training and schooling options provide numerous possibilities to help students prepare for careers.

A simple definition of psychology is the study of human mental functions and behaviors. This is a broad definition that allows students to enter many different areas of study. Through different degree programs students can study subjects like:

  • Cognition
  • Personality
  • Behavior
  • Dream Theory
  • Motivation

These subjects are included in the different specialized fields that are available at campus-based schools across the country. Psychology degree schools offer students the chance to study how to help their clients develop strong mental health. This is conducted through a variety of ways that is ultimately determined by the specialization students choose. Education is grounded in science and liberal arts, which students build on while gaining specific knowledge and skills used in the industry.

Most psychology careers require students to have at least a master's degree to practice as a psychologist. Students can gain education in this field from an associate's degree to a doctorate degree. Undergraduate study at the associate's and bachelor's degree levels provide students with a fundamental overview of the field. This allows students to further their education at the graduate degree level or step into a career. Students can train to work in social service, advertising, business, and education. When pursuing a graduate degree at either the master's or doctorate degree level students are required to choose a specialty. Master's degree programs help students acquire advanced capability to conduct research and utilize their analytical reasoning. Earning a PhD is highly recommended to become a practicing psychologist. Schools prepare students by providing a very focused and centralized area of study. The options that students have for educational study can be gained through numerous colleges and universities. Depending on the career goals of students, higher education may take anywhere from four to eight years to complete.

Students can expect to take courses on cognitive, abnormal, general, and environmental psychology in an undergraduate degree program. These types of courses are utilized to prepare students for further education. A general psychology course introduces students to the main topics in the field. This includes examining the different schools of thought. Major areas of study include:

  • Perception
  • Human Development
  • Personality
  • Social Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology

To learn about how individuals acquire and access knowledge students take a cognitive psychology course. Study can include topics such as development, memory, attention, and language. These two courses are just a general overview. Further educational study prepares students to understand complex theories and practices.

The need for psychologists is expected to increase twelve percent by 2018 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This projected increase is due to the continual need for psychologists in areas such as schools and hospitals. Students interested in this field should consider enrolling in an accredited program that is approved by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). Choosing a school is the first step to finding a psychology degree program and specialty.
