Ask yourself these tough questions before you make your decision to go back to school. School will always be a great tool in advancing your income but you need to make sure you're going for the right reasons. Remember to get an idea of the best job opportunities in this recession.
Are you running out of options in this recession? You think school is the only choice left because you have been unable to find a job. This is the wrong kind of thinking. Chances are, if you take this route, without making a planned approach towards school, you'll just end up with a huge debt by graduation. Ask yourself these following questions before you take the plunge.
- Do you want to add more job skills to your resume? Additional skills, that are specific to the career, will be very helpful on a resume and for your future. You should go back to school if this is your reason.
- Are you going back to school solely because there are no jobs available? This is one of the biggest mistakes someone can make. They will end up with more debt and take classes that are irrelevant to their future careers. More importantly, by going back to school in this fashion, you take yourself out of the real world and weaken your work experience.
- Do you want to raise your potential for making money in the future? With this mindset, you will take classes that are specific to your future job. It is likely that you have work experience, so go back to school to supplement that knowledge. For example, if you worked in a retail setting, go take some marketing classes.
- Is going back to school what everyone else is telling you to do? Do not follow everyone else's path. School should not be a following but rather a calling. You must make the choice because school requires a lot of dedication and commitment.
Even if this is a bad economy, you must carefully consider all your options. Returning back to school is a huge investment and cannot be taken lightly. Make sure you are prepared to handle the costs, both monetary and mentally.
