Sat Math: Battle Of The Brains
Have you begin your SAT test preparation? Are you one of those who dread the math section of the SAT? Test-taking strategies combined with effective prepping can see you through the math section with ease. You don't have to have the mind of Einstein to do well on the math section of the SAT. This is because SAT math is more of a puzzle solving section and less of a math section. (Read my previous articles to learn about this!)
Time to flex your math muscles
To do well in the math section, you must develop the habit of solving hundreds of math problems, mostly without using calculator, The more you allow your brain to work on math problems, the sharper will it get. It's more like building muscle- you need to work your brain time and again. SAT practice tests contain hundreds if challenging math problems to make you comfortable with the math section. Can math be called a participation sport? Yes, indeed.
Wield the Time-Sword effectively
It is important to monitor the time spent on each section of the SAT. You cannot afford to get stuck with a question and waste your precious time. The SAT does not reward you for your rigorous efforts in solving a difficult question. You must therefore spend no more 2 minutes on a question. It is better to skip and approach another question than whacking your brains with a problem that challenges your ego. Try solving problems that appear at the beginning of every section as these are the simplest questions.
Exploit your strengths
You should know your strengths. There are four ways to solving a math problem- analytically, numerically, and graphically. Analytical approach makes use of equations, numerical style is about using numbers as an example, and the graphical method involves making a diagram or graph to get a clear picture of the question. Guessing, if smartly done, can be fruitful. Do not hesitate to eliminate the wrong choices.
Math Vocabulary
Sat test preparation emphasizes on enriching your English vocabulary. But do you try building your math vocabulary? There are many terms in math that can confuse you. These terms especially confuse students in complex word problems. Geometry is one area where developing math vocabulary can pay off instantly.
Student-Produced Responses Or Grid-Ins
This section of the SAT allows a student to solve questions without answer choices. There is no negative marking for this section. Never fill in the grid with answers in percentages. For example, if your answer is 1/3, you can register 2/6, .333, .334. Answers such as .3, .4 or .34 are incorrect.
Watching those silly mistakes
Many times a student computes the right answer but fails to convert the answer into the desired unit. Thus, the student ends up wasting time, and answering the question incorrectly. You just pay attention to the units given in the problem. If the question asks you to give the answer in miles and you have computed our answer in KM, you should convert into miles and then look at the answer choices.
Never rely on any particular book for SAT test preparation, every book has its pros and cons. A book can never guide you as effectively as a tutor can. Confidence, determination and diligence are the three traits than can see you through the SAT.
