Save Money On Textbooks

Purchasing textbooks is a major source of expense for any college student. Textbooks containing technical material such as engineering, mathematics or science are especially expensive, easily selling for over $200. Spending over a thousand dollars on textbooks every semester would be typical if you are majoring in one of these technical subjects.

School bookstores are by no means student-budget friendly. The books are very expensive, and you will never be able to sell them back for the same price. You will only receive a fraction of what you bough the books for, no matter how good a condition you kept them in. Sometimes the professor will decide to use a new edition of the same book for next semester, which means the book you just spent $200 on is now completely worthless.

Bookstores will have used textbooks available, which would definitely be cheaper than buying a new textbook, but used books are limited. The longer you wait to get your books, the less likely it is that the textbook you need will be available. Used textbooks will be in very poor condition, with torn pages, missing covers, extensive highlighting and writing in the margins.

So what are some other options? Write the ISBNs for the textbooks you need. ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, which is a 13-digit number code that identifies each book individually. The ISBN can be found by the barcode on the back or inside cover of your textbook.

Once you have the ISBNs of your textbooks, you can go online and search for websites that offer discount textbooks. Or look for websites that offer textbooks rentals. Renting textbooks is still a fairly new idea, and not many students know about it. Renting is great option for budget-conscious students, and there are so many advantages. At the end of the semester, you won't have to find a reseller to take your books back when you're done with them. This method is environmentally friendly, as no new trees will be cut down for these books. Renting textbooks online is a much less expensive option that purchasing new or used books on your college bookstore.

There are a few disadvantages to note when renting textbooks. First, there are no guarantees that the book you need will be available online. Textbooks are rented out for a specific number of days – semesters, quarters and summer sessions. Students will have to wait for delivery of the book by mail, so order them as early as possible. Some rental sites may require the student to pay for all the shipping costs, which can be substantial since books weigh a lot.

It is best to be prepared when the time comes again for you to get new textbooks. Research which method will work the best for you and save money next semester!
