StudentScholarships.org - Engineers are making revolutionary Inventions

Posted: May 16, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

In today's society, one can not keep up with all of the technological advances that are being made.  Everyday a new revolutionary invention is being designed.  Who is making these discoveries?  Engineers are the people who make everyday life happen.  These professionals work everyday on taking a scientist's theory and making it exist.

Without engineers the cost of goods for consumers would be exponentially higher.  An engineer is supposed to design an extraordinary product and figure out a way to build it using the least amount of money possible while still having the invention be brilliant.  If one is to sit down and think about the energy crisis that our world is facing with high bills kicking America in the face all year long, then he/she will see that the problem will not go away without the help of engineers.  Different fields of study take electric, hydroelectric and nuclear energy and try to find a way to transfer the power that these processes make into energy to run a car or heat a house.

With the world's population growing, who is going to design the houses that people will live in or the city infrastructure to take them to their destinations and make sure no one perishes in the process?  Engineers not only design the project, but oversee the construction to ensure that safety regulations are met.  For example, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940, four months after it was built, due to a wind storm that buckled the bridge into the frigid, crashing waters below.  Thankfully no one was hurt, but if the engineer had known more about his field and done a more thorough investigation to make sure that the bridge could withstand the predicted weather conditions for that region of the country, then the collapse may not have taken place at all.

Although not all engineers seem to be geniuses, the word "engineer" is derived from the Latin word "ingenium" which sparked, from the same root, the words "genius" and "ingenious" into our English language.  So with those words, one can assume that engineers are supposed to be creative and inventive.  They are the ones that are expected to imagine what the world will need in later years and draft a model.

I believe that engineering will be the most helpful major for an individual to have in today's society, because they deal with every aspect of life.  Without engineers the world would still be in the stone ages living in caves for shelter and spearing buffalo from the great prairie for food.  In the future, engineers will be the ones who will take the world to the next level where science fiction will meet reality.
