Be the leader. If you no one is willing to step up and take charge of the project then be ready to fill those shoes. You cannot ace a group project if there is no one to lead the assignment. The leader will settle the group and focus energies on the project at hand. Lead discussions on who will do the work for certain aspects of the group project.
Know your teammates. Maybe there is someone who excels at finding research material. Give them a duty that involves searching for facts. Anther person may be extremely good at working with computers. See if they have the software and knowledge to present your project in an interesting way.
The next step is to be sure that everyone can handle their duties. Give people due dates and benchmarks for their progress. Find out early if someone is slacking off. A group project means you get a group grade. Your teacher will not know that one person did most of the work. Every teammate gets the same grade. Make it a point to meet regularly in person or online to be sure that everyone can handle their jobs. If someone is having difficulty, discuss ways to lighten their load or try swapping duties.
Your deadline is not the day the project is due. Set a deadline a few days before the actual due date. This will allow you to put all the pieces of the project together. You must see the whole project before you turn it in. If there are parts that need work, figure it out early. You will still have time to redo a section or scrap a certain part. You will not regret spending time on putting the project together way before your due date.
Lastly, make sure you present your project well. If it is a report, be sure to have all your pages neat and numbered. If your teacher requests that your report be bound be sure you have adhered to the presentation guidelines. Do not turn in sloppy looking work. If it looks sloppy, your teacher will have a hard time believing that the proper amount of time was spent working on the project.
If your project is a group presentation, be sure that all your group members will be in attendance. Dress neatly and professionally. Group presentations in grad school are like mock presentation you will make in your professional career. Treat your presentation as if you were speaking to the president of a company. Be courteous and clear in your speaking voice. Practicing your presentation beforehand will make you less anxious come presentation day.
Acing a presentation is about having enough time to get the job done right. So don't wait until the last minute to get all your work done. In the professional world, sometimes one chance is all you've got.
