What to Wear Under Your Graduation Gown
Graduation is a special time for you and your family. It is an exciting time which celebrates the end of your grade school years and the beginning of your new life. With that in mind, it is important that your graduation ceremony, and the aftermath, go smoothly as possible. Believe it or not, the clothes that you wear underneath your graduation gown may have a big impact on how great your graduation night can be.
For instance, if you are wearing something uncomfortable, you may not be able to take your mind off of your uncomfortability, and you may spend the whole night unhappy. On the other hand, if you do wear something that you like, something that does not get in the way of whatever fun you may have, you will be a happy camper. So, here are a few tips on what to wear under your gown.
Shoes
Always wear comfortable shoes. You will be on your feet all day, and if you are practicing on the day of graduation, you will also want to wear comfortable shoes. Be sure that your shoes are nice, unless they will be covered by your gown. If they are not visible, you do not have to wear fancy shoes. You can even wear your most comfortable sneakers. For ladies, wearing high heels is not advisable. Stick to the flat ballet shoes or shoes that provide support for your arch and soles.
Pants/Slacks/Skirts
Ladies should stick to wearing flowy pants or slacks, as well as skirts. These will all be accommodating and will not inhibit you from moving around. If you wear tight jeans underneath, you may become uncomfortable as the night wears on. If you live in a hot climate and you are graduating in May or June, you will not want to wear anything tight underneath a gown. Dresses are also appropriate.
For men, slacks will also work. These are comfortable and will keep you cool. Slacks that match the color of your gown would be nice, though lighter colored slacks will work with lighter colored gowns, and darker slacks with darker colored gowns.
Shirts/blouses/tops
The collars generally should not show over the gown. Men should avoid wearing collared shirts, mostly because they will be too hot to wear. Women should stick to wearing more flowy blouses and tops, and avoid long-sleeved collared shirts that are buttoned all the way down. These can also prove uncomfortable throughout the night.
As you can see, the amount of comfortability that you feel in your graduation clothes may affect the quality of the rest of your graduation experience.
