Adult Friend Finder: Is It Really Involved In A Scam?

Adult Friend Finder is one of the most visited commercial websites on the internet, an online sex and swinger personals community now accommodating more than 20 million members worldwide. Basic membership and registration on Adult Friend Finder is free but you need to upgrade your membership in order to contact other members via anonymous email, instant messaging, webcam etc, and enjoy the other features. For example, with Gold Membership ($12 per month), you can view other profiles, video introductions, live video streams, contribute to an online magazine, and more. With basic membership, you can only post a profile.

Like many online dating and personals websites, Adult Friend Finder has also been accused of scams and online phishing (a criminal activity that uses social engineering techniques). Many has reported that owners of this popular online community have been deceiving the public by creating and posting fake profiles with photographs of beautiful and attractive women, in order to draw visitors. These innocent visitors are then directed to porn sites, or an Adult Friend Finder scam known as Advance fee fraud, an online confidence scam in which the target is convinced to advance moderately small sums of money in the hope of securing a much larger gain.

Adult Friend Finder scam is also based on charges regarding the use of contentious advertising techniques such as spam and spyware, designed to collect many different types of information about the user, and interrupt the normal operation of the visitor's computer in order to promote a third party. For example, using this malicious software, the Adult Friend Finder scam can track what types of websites a user visits and send this information to an advertisement agency.

Supporters of Adult Friend Finder claim that approximately 4-5% of the population in most U.S. states has a profile on Adult Friend Finder, and half of these profiles are for Men seeking Women. These profiles are not duplicate, fraudulent, or inactive, and the Adult Friend Finder scam has been fabricated by competing websites to defame and discredit the very successful online adult community website. However, there are other views that maintain that the Adult Friend Finder scam is a reality that cannot be ignored.

The most recent criticism comes from people who claim to have been fooled into purchasing full membership by the Adult Friend Finder scam, which uses "decoys" in the chat rooms. According to witnesses, these chat room decoys operate by posing as real people to initiate a continuous conversation with their mark. Once a potential victim has been identified, he/she would then be coaxed into purchasing or upgrading into full membership to access all of the sites features.

In addition to the above criticism, even members who have purchased full membership (such as Gold Members) have been complaining about Adult Friend Finder scams such as fake communications, requesting e-mail and asking to pay for an account on another website.

AFF works...at least it did for my guy & I...we were looking for fun that went a step beyond what your average couple may be looking for and AFF allowed us to meet some fun & REAL people. Not everyone we contacted ended up in success...but then again that would be the same as when you are meeting people in the real world. I never had a problem with the site and would never call it a scam...but it's not the guaranteed way to hook up either...just like real life.

I have used AFF for years. Have had the time of my life with it. The site is NOT just for Heterosexuals. It is for everyone, with every type of sexual desire. It is not a site for dating, it is for people that want to have sex. I have a huge appetite. I have met men and women, couples, and they were all for real. Sure there are scams, but as long as you have an IQ above 50 they arnt hard to spot

The friend-finer sites are a sham. They're not like regular dating sites. What they do is send you a message from phantom profiles with pictures of beautiful women "in your area". But to see these messages, you have to pay and join the site, only to find out the profiles aren't real. It's the company that sets up these profiles, and well, once they have your CC info, they bill you monthly until you quit.

I'm actually amazed these sites are still up and running, however I won't be surprised when some industrious reporter or attorney general blows the whistle and nails these guys for wire-fraud.

I should know. I worked for Adult Friend Finder for a couple of months.

AdultFriendFinder.com is LARGELY A FRAUD!!! Most of the profiles there are complete FAKES! Penthouse (aka FriendFinder) has created all these fake profiles to lure mostly men to make monthly payments. SHAME ON YOU PENTHOUSE! And many police departments internet crime divisions create fake profiles there to catch predators. Thats the only good thing thats come out of this that I strongly support!

9. Friendfinder member (21:53, 03.09.2007)
Seems to me this scam works with ordinary Friendfinder and Seniorfriendfinder too. I signed up as silver with Friendfinder and free with Seniorfriendfinder. As others commented, I get no contacts on the silver, and several messages I can't read on the free one. They claim free members can read and respond to paying members but it appears they can't. What happens is you follow the instructions to read a message, you get taken to the upgrade billing page and asked to pay.

This is a serious and subtle scam. They attract their claimed 1.8M members by offering a service which is free one-way, like most others, and use this base to justify the fees charged to paying members. But in reality these so called members are not actually contactable at all, as they never had any intention of paying, they just wanted to wait for someone who paid to contact them. And they will wait forever, all they ever get is invitations to upgrade. Most "members" show as inactive for over a month, and have not even filed a photo, which supports the theory that there is a continuous turnover of disappointed members.

I have tried 2 adult personals sites, one being AFF.

I have to echo the sentiments of most replies on this page. I was interested primarily in the amateur content, but also as time went on in getting to know a few people for some fun online.

As a 'standard' member you start receiving winks, messages, invites, people adding you to their contacts list, and your profile generally gets loads of views per week. Great.

So you find to actually view who's contacted you and reply, you have to subscribe, fair enough... Only after you pay for your gold or silver membership do you notice that views / contact from other members drops off suddenly. A little suspicious? Maybe just a coincidence, lets not be too cynical.

You get some pretty ludicrous emails from so-called local females too, detailing how horny they are and what they would like to do to you... A polite reply back requesting further contact seems to get lost in the ether, perhaps they are too busy answering emails from the 100 billion male members.

I think this stupidly high male to female ratio is a big part of the problem which effects regular dating sites and not just adult sites. Just not enough women are interested enough to make the site work as a commercial enterprise, so the peeps in charge have to resort to some 'crafty' tactics to entice standard members to sign up as 'Gold' members.

I have noticed that A LOT of the female profiles haven't been accessed within the last 2 months.

Anyway, just a warning really, don't expect your money's worth on any of these sites. Take some advice from this mug. (never again though)

I paid $30 for a Gold Membership and cancelled it the next day.
You can't refine searches unless you pay for a membership, so it was only after I paid that I realized what a scam it was.
There is a bug in their search engine that only returns 1024 records. Given the massive number of men who have Gold and Silver memberships (forget the free ones even) this almost guarantees statistically that your profile won't be seen. Even if the few real women on there cared to wade through a thousand profiles, yours would probably be #1025.
I kept hitting the 1024 limit when searching for men (checking out the competition) that I had to restrict my search to only ATHLETIC men within a 20 mile radius of zip code 19104 (Philadelphia) who had photos and were Gold or Silver members. I did the same for women to compare numbers: 825 male profiles vs. just 18 female profiles, some of which were obvious fakes.
This comapny is crooked through and through. Given the statistical insignificance of anybody actually seeing my profile, I actually had all my photos Scored by someone within the first 24 hours, all high scores to boot (9's and 10's). Honestly, I'm more of a 6 or 7, so this immediately set off alarms and I cancelled my account.
Note about cancelling -- AdultFriendFinder warns you to turn OFF autorenew before cancelling an account. It's set to ON by default. Presumably, they would continue to charge your credit card even after cancelling otherwise. Real classy.

I have been a member, standard only, on and off for the past few years. I am a real woman that posts on that site and have had success in meeting like-minded men.

I hear men complain all the time that women don't write them back. Sometimes, a woman is just not interested. Plus, I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets slammed with email. It isn't always possible to answer back - though I do try when there is a well written request.

Personally, I am more prone to answer mail that is written in complete sentences, doesn't involve language treating me like a slut and the person is honest about what they want.

I haven't been spammed, tricked or harrassed by bots or had to upgrade my account in order to enjoy my membership.

It seems like all the main complaints come from men - both here and on sites like rip-off report. Most women I have talked to and have posted comments on the web about AFF seem satisfied.

I've been on AFF for nearly a year now and quite honestly I am sickened and appalled at the blatant scam that is going on. But what can any one person do...they are too big and powerful to take on and even get your membership fee back. I tried approaching them directly with evidence of a pop up advert showing 15 - 20 stunning woman that were supposed to live in my area but simply do not exist on the site - but you know what they did....absolutely nothing, and why would they when they were banged to rights that way. All we can do is wait for all the membership fees to gradually die out as people realise the truth about the site.

We as a couple have met real couples on there. I think the main problem on there is that single males draw the short end of the stick. couples want couples and single females mostly single males out number the females and couples and are the least saught out of the 3 so its gonna be that way.

we very rarely never recieved a reply and always replied to mail sent our way.

Same here. I was a gold member for about 3 months. I was contacted by one member who appeared to be legit. I must have attempted numerous contacts and had been very genuine where I had even asked to reply if they were not even interested, and nothing. I think if there were women on there from my area looking, I would have gotten at least a not interested. There stats show that they are a scam with many canned adds.

24. Does it matter?! (18:20, 11.11.2008)
OK - so I am a web developer & know something about the intricacies of building websites.

I found that adult friend finder is a load of crap and here are my reasons:

1 - I supposedly had various flirts, by all sorts of women... but out of those flirts only one person actually viewed my profile - you draw your own conclusions from that but I wouldn't flirt with someone who's profile I hadn't even read.

2 - I emailed three of the women who supposedly flirted with me, and received no replies at all from my apparent flirtees... not even to say 'no' or 'sorry, not my type' etc. Still if they couldn't be bothered to read my profile then it stands to reason that they wouldn't take the time to reply!

3 - I jumped from three flirts to ten at the same time that the site conveniently reminded me to re-subscribe for gold membership. Out of the those extra seven 'flirts' not a single profile remained active, only one day later.

So, my professional opinion is... it's either a scam or a very badly programmed website. I think it is really sad that people try to extort money from lonely people, sadder still that those people will continue to let it happen, because they don't want to face the prospect of a lonely life.a

I can see where all the negative comments come from but you need to look at both sides of the coin. I have been on AFF for a little over one week. I have attempted to make contact with over 100 ladies from different places. Not all have replied back but there are a few who have and that's the least I expected from this site. I've had a few bogus profiles I found but one's got to be smart enough to figure them out.

I don't know why you people say using phoney pics and profiles are considered a " Scam" Its just business. if you own a used car lot are you gonna use the ugliest car on the lot in your commercial? of course not. someone mentioned a 10 to 1 retio i think its a lot higher than that, Anyway If your a single male with those odds Your not going to get that many responses regardless of how many profiles are fake. And theres no girl out there slutty enough to take care of all her emails. heres a hint guys put your face on your main photo, women arent as of obscessed with penis as you think, Ive been on AFF as a single guy and a couple and believe me its tough if your a guy period. Ive seen the single guy side and i can see why most of you guys don't get responses. Don't blame the site cause your a loser and can't get a date. I think its well worth a measly 12 dollars a month.

There seems to be a lot of confusion, in part because the site IS involved in some very shady practices (provable ones include crazy membership policies and increased billing rates once you pay for an initial membership) but at the same time the site does have REAL people who join for REAL reasons. Do you think the ONLY people who are suckered into joining are also straight men? No. Presumably, straight women are also "suckered," if at a much lower rate. (And gay men, because they are MEN and equally likely to join, don't have to be "suckered," though this definitely isn't a gay-centric site.) There are a lot of inactive profiles, and there are a lot of spammers, but the spammers are incredibly easy to spot; their profiles always read the same way, breaking off mid-sentence after about four lines. And they never bother to answer the "additional questions." Now, with a male/female ratio this skewed, guys are not going to have much luck unless they really have something to offer. Out there in the physical world, you have roughly even odds, at least in terms of numbers. But on one of these sites, women are much less likely to participate, and they have the pick of the litter. Are you pretty good-looking and cut? No? Then your chances aren't going to be that great. Is your profile thoughtful, literate, and detailed? No? Then, again, you're out of luck. Like I said, I have noticed a lot of spam, and I have even noticed some profiles that might be bots working on behalf of the site itself. But I happen to be good-looking and capable of writing more than "WHo R ladies want 2 fuk this weeknd? Hit me up." (When I check other dudes' profiles out of curiosity, they're almost always like that.) So occasionally, though the odds are long, I do wind up having extended online exchanges with (real, intelligent, interesting) people and occasionally meeting up in person.

It's not a magic site. It's probably HARDER to meet people on it than it is in real life. But the appeal, of course, is that the people on it (and this goes for Alt.com, too) are TOTALLY clear about what they want. If you're a straight man and want to get in on that, you're up against a lot of other straight men, and you're not being judged by your charm or presence. It's how good you look and how engagingly you write. If you're not getting laid the old fashioned way and it's not due to some crippling shyness or something like that, you're going to do WORSE online, not better.

Well apart from the fake profiles, emails, there are a few real people, paying and non paying that are on there. However the ratio of men to women is unreal. You can't navigate the site without a swinging D_ _K popping you in the eye, and the women that are real on there seem to be looking for more female company than male company. I personally got more e mail from Gay or Bi guys than I ever did from women. I'd never pay for there service, because their server (speed) really sucks, and trying to cam to cam is almost impossible.

I think AFF just picks the most popular photos and distributes them in every add claiming that they are people on your city.

I am a man who lives in Costa Rica, and I worked for Horny Matches. They would pay us to pose as girls so that we could convince guys to upgrade their accounts, we did that for several different websites in some kind of outsourcing. I still remember lines like "no baby, i won't meet you til i'm ready, let's keep chatting and get to know each other better, is that ok hun?". Of course for the guys to keep talking he would have to buy what they call "tokens", or upgrade to a full membership.
I got tired of doing that crap for just $0.05 per message, but I can tell you that, as you read this, there are about 400 or 500 people still doing it.
So, if you're a member of a dating site chances are that Susan, the girl you're dreaming of, has got an extra body part you don't really want to include in your dream.

I wonder what this is about. I have been a member of AFF three times: once 2 months and twice one month. After each time I had sex with about 5 women, so 15 at all. Some I still meet from time to time and one every week. And yes she is very beautiful. So I have no reason to believe in a scam. If there are fake profiles, they are probably made by frustrated members themselves.
If you have no results, change your tactics. Never go for the sex directly. Show some personal interest. And show a picture of your erect dick only if you are one.

I did use AFF 4-5 years ago for ` month, I rememebr when i created a profile at first, I used to recieve messages everyday from ladies wanting to meet. I was recieving 5-10 messages a day, i was thrilled so i signed up. tried contacting all of those girls, and nothing happened. no replys waht so ever.

suddenly no one messages me anymore, and i realsied it was a scam. so eventually i did get 1 date with a nice women, but later had her account deleted because she gave me her phone number from it. Regardless , 1 month fee in aff was a waste of money. I managed to get far more dates from plentyoffish.com the only 100% free website i found. you cant post naughty photos, but eventually you can find what you want.

I did sign up as a Silver member for 1 month. I met three women and had sex with two. Recently, I signed up for another month but this time as a gold member. I have noticed that AFF now clamps down on fake profiles rapidly. In the past 10 days 57 women have flirted with me and only three have NOT been deleted by AFF. There appears to be a new trend with scammers where they don't post a photograph but upload a series of videos. Don't be fooled though, all they do is take an already short video and cut them into pointless 4 second clips.

A typical fake profile reads like this:

"hi im a sexy educated lady looking for REAL love i am comitted to men .... i want to chat i luv chatting want to know u i like all men im horny"

Apart from those three encounters and fake profiles, my experience is the same as the rest of you folk i.e. women just don't respond, the male-female ratio is ridiculous, women don't take this site seriously.

Anyway, hasn't anyone noticed that this website advertises itself with women only. Perhaps AFF is actually targetted at men ?

Remember to turn your Auto ReNew off !!!

For the 3 months, I moved from basic member to Silver, then Gold, just because they got you into this nice pictures and post and then lure you into upgrading to get more privilage. My emails/messages never get any respond. First, I thought my profile is not attractive, so in all messages I sent, I requested the reciever to reply something even a single word of "not interest" and all those time I still never get a reply...Finally, I decided to create a dummy profile so that I can test it and confirm that I could never contact my own profile from one to another.

I've been a member of AFF for about 4 years and this is what I've found....... First off, men don't stand a chance of meeting anyone unless they upgrade to silver or gold membership. I upgraded to silver so I could send Emails and I was able to get about 1 in 10 answered. 1 in 10 of the 1 in 10 actually was willing to chat with me outside of AFF and a small fraction of those I actually met. I only got the silver 'script so I could watch the webcams. All the rest was just a bonus. And ya know, to be honest, the reason I'm here/ found this site is because I can't get to the AFF login page......... Go figgure....... Oh and BTW, the magizine has plenty of great advice for how to initiate contact with women AND it's written by women.........

I was looking at my credit card statement online ysterday and I noticed a charge I didn't make for $26.99. I called the number for the transaction and got a voice mail that didn't identify the company. I called again this morning and found it was Friend Finder. Somehow they got my credit card number and I was enrolled in their servies. The woman I spoke to tried to convince me to keep my membership, which i never signed up for, and I was able to cancel it. Does anyone know how they could get my credit card number. When I asked, the woman wouldn't answer me. This just isnt right!

There are plenty of genuine people on AFF, but lots of fake profiles too. I (along with lots of other people) suspect these fake profiles were created by AFF in an attempt to con users into joining.

I'd like to do something about this, but I'm not sure what. Surely this is fraud and should be pursued in the criminal courts?

This site is an autter waste one, just like every other normal dating sites...You must join for membership at your own risk as there is a hidden automatic membership renewal system.....so you will be charged even after the date of your membership period expires..As long as men are too much into sex, and women are not much into that, I would like to tell all readers, please dont waste your time and money into these types of fraud sites....

No, I'm not being paid by AFF. And yes, I found the site mostly to be fake, or very ineffective. BUT I was a member for one month, sent out over 100 messages, did "hook" an attractive young woman by email and then phone, setting up a date to my house for that same evening. She finally showed up at 12:30/1am, looked decent in person, but didn't feel comfortable, used the restroom and left. Admittedly, I was nervous as hell since it would have been my first same-day online hookup. So I didn't play it well and lost a nice opportunity that night. Given the low response ratio, I haven't signed back up since then, but unlike some other scam sites out there, if you're willing to put in a lot of effort for minimal results, AFF could occasionally work.

I paid a subscription to adultfriendfinder. I think $30 for the main package and $20 to allow standard members to contact me. I spent few days editing my profile and I sent 100 messages (all well prepared). In 3 days I got ZERO responses even from ugly girls. My only success was to talk to some really really ugly but very nice girls on the chat. They warned me that the place is full of fakes. Then in the chat I started being vocal. I accused the network of being fake and I pasted various accusations I found online. Instantly my profile was deleted and in one week my subscription was fully refunded (I did not make a single phone call). I am not sure if it means anything, but it is interesting indeed.

it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell they do scam (switch and bait). Just look on your first page when you are signed in, look at Recent New Member Photo Gallery! notice how they are all hot women with only one picture, also look at the profile, they are worded the same and only 1 sentence maybe two. i been checking into this for some time and even found the same profile in 4 diff states..

While I cant deny the claims of fraud, I can say I have hooked up with several hot women in my area that I met on there. I am not a paying member I met them all in chat or with the instant messenger.

Ya this site is a complete scam. The profiles must be all completely fake. Before I had a paid membership I would get messages all the time from attractive girls "in my area" who would want to meet up, chat, etc..and once you pay they all stop. I wouldn't say I'm the ugliest nor the prettiest guy in the world but you'd try and message girls "In your area" but they would NEVER EVER respond. I think from being on the site for a month I got one message..which was a web cam spammer. SCAM!

i am in no doubt that it is a scam. people "wink" at you yet they dont appear in your "viewed by" list... others disappear after they contact you..and just today i had a person respond via email to my email. The problem was that this person is registered as a standard member- i.e. these member types CANNOT send emails. So how can this be?
ive sent emails with specific detail to try to catch out the "bots" and so far they return with 100% confirmation that they are not human..as none of the specifics are addressed. In addition to this, the dialects used do not align with the profiles posted.
i am preparing an investigation lead by my country's consumer affairs dept..who in turn are looking into it via international trade and treaty laws. I anticipate that there could be a class action in the future as i cannot be the only one deceived by this. luckily its cost me only $25. But $25 is $25. Add that up for the thousands of members and that's alot of dough!

Its obvious that AFF only works out great for couples. Single males actually have NO realistic chance what so ever finding a woman there ! You will get a better value for money return if you invest the spent membership fees in going out and socialize meeting REAL single ladies in a club or bar !! Wouldn't you agree ??!!

I've been on AFF for a couple of years, I have met some really good friends. I think that some men think its a scam because there profiles are not well thought out, and they dont get the responce they would like, I get 10 to 20 hits on my profile daily, The men who have the well thought out hottest profiles I respond to. Some of you men need to get some help with your photoes , get a haircut, shave some of that excess hair off your butt, and some of you don't need to be showing everything.

GUYS: it's very hard to tell whether AFF uses fake profiles or not. The reason is two-fold: the ratio of men:women is about 10:1, which is in the high range of normal for any dating website, AND most women do not pay for the full membership, so they are limited in their answering capability. I get ONE e-mail reply for every 20 I send, and unfortunately this may be the natural state of things... Just keep trying and be creative! Or else, find women in real life, not behind the computer screen where people never act themselves!

I talk to tons of people on AFF chat and the only bots I've ever seen are advertising for another site. I get about 40 emails a day, and since I'm not a paying member, I can only respond to 10 a day. So there are tons of men I don't respond to at all. I get email that says "are you real?" and yep, I am real, just don't pay for more replies to say no, lol.

I have been a member of AFF for nearly 10 yrs now - most of the time as a free member but I have paid in the past for both Silver and Gold level. As a standard member though I have had the most luck. True, I can't generally view profiles or initiate emails (unless I get 50 page views - then I can briefly!), but the IM is free and has lead to quite a few good connections for me. There are a LOT of fake profiles on the site, you just need to know what to look for. And as for the ads where they claim the hot girls are in your area - there's fine print on the site mentioning that the pics are just samples of what you might find on the site. So yes it's misleading but it's in the fine print. Long story short - don't pay, don't expect much but make the most of what you do find - there ARE some hot horny women on there ;)

They scammed my wife by claiming one rate then charging another, much higher, rate, all during a "so-called" trial period. Despite that incident, I became an affiliate and promoted them, stupid, I know, and, guess what ??? They did not pay me. I guess I should have seen that coming. It's a scam if you don't have the social skills to interact with actual people in the real world. Remember people, you are dealing with the realm of "CYBERLLUSION". I tried gold membership a few years ago. Yipee.... I have more luck remaining a standard member and being patient(frustrated). I have even better luck striking up a conversation in convenience stores, supermarkets, gas stations or just going to the park. I do enjoy the free porn and have made contact with real people on aff & alt. Regardless, if ......forget it I gotta go family emergency..............................................

Well, I have seen three profiles that I know are real in my hometown because I dated one of them and am friends with the other two girls. I'm not saying there aren't fake profiles either. Do you know why most guys don't receive replies? It's because the girls aren't interested in seeing your aging, hairy cock. And they aren't interested in having sex with balding losers in their fourties and fifties.
