Before You Buy, Learn the Differences in Satellite Internet

Every once in a while, you need to update your technology. You update your televisions, your music players, your Internet. Gone are the days of dial up connections where you have to wait long periods of time and go without a phone line to just check a few e-mails. Luckily, there are three major different types of Internet to choose from now. Before you make the decision of how to outfit your home's connectivity, there are some basic things you should know about the DSL, high speed cable and satellite Internet broadband providers. The following are basic explanations of each:

1.Cable connections, unlike satellite broadband but similar to DSL, are location dependent. Cable and DSL connections are considered variable connections because they need to rely on various other outlets in order to succeed and work in a certain community or home connection. To gain Internet accessibility via a cable provider, you are relying on a television provider, and it's usually the one that is most popular in your neighborhood.  Tons of cable providers offer only package deals for high-speed cable Internet, sold in bundles with premium television channels and land phone lines, sometimes even cell phones now. For now, though, you're thinking about your Internet connection. For some areas, grouping these packages together with cable instead of satellite Internet or DSL could be a problem because when there is only one company, you may not be getting a good deal on the services for your home or office. In addition, unlike with satellite broadband, if you lose your connection with a cable provider, you likely lose power to your television, Internet and phone lines.

2.DSL is the hardest connection to find because it is entirely location dependent. DSL works specifically on phone lines — making it similarly inefficient to dial up, aside from the snails' pace connection. With DSL, your city or state needs to be equipped with special copper phone wires underground, unlike cable or satellite broadband. Without them, the connection will not work and your home will be rendered Internet-less. Only these copper wires can send the signals necessary to connect to high speed Internet via a DSL connection. It is the most limited service of the three major types of providers because as you move farther south or west in the United States and abroad, the copper wires are harder to come by, especially in states that are not coastal. To find out if you have the proper equipment, do a quick Google search.

3.With satellite Internet broadband, web surfing capabilities do not change because of the type of connection. They are comparably as fast as cable and DSL, despite the dishes being located outside of Earth and in other obscure locations to transmit signals. Unlike cable and DSL, satellite Internet broadband isn't dependent on location or area providers, allowing you to connect whenever and however you need.
