Digital Television

Digital Television or DTV is referred to as the method of sending and receiving sound and mobile images through digital signals. This should not be likened to the analog signals of analog TV. The term “digital” refers to a binary code, 0’s and 1’s, which is like computer language. DTV signals are different from the Analog TV signals, which are like radio signals or frequencies.

The Digital Television technology was introduced in the latter years of the 1990s and it was a call on the TV broadcasting business as well as consumer electronics industry as it came with financial opportunities. DTV is more flexible and well-organized than analog TV. It allows high-quality sounds and images added with enhance program choices. This is where Digital Television scores over its analog version.

As far as the cables are concerned, a digital signal does not always carry a better quality sound or image than its analog counterpart. However, the possibilities with respect to Digital Television are more. Consider a case: the capacity of HDMI cables is about 1080P resolution in addition to sound delivery, while that of analog component cables is 1080i resolution and that too without sound.

As far as the latter is concerned, experts are unanimous in their view. It has been proved that the sound emitted by a reel-to-reel tape or an analog record is the best you can possibly get. It has taken Digital Television quite a considerable amount of time in producing the audio equivalent of analog TV, with the high storage blu-ray disks showing up.

The primary motivating factor behind the international revolution in the satellite-delivered direct-to-home distribution of DTH TV program has been digital video compression. Digital Television makes use of digital television signals which are broadcasted in a configuration that is condensed. This helps in noticeably reducing the necessary bandwidth (data transmission) of the frequency without adversely or significantly affecting the superiority of the received images and sounds. This is the reason as to why the count of the DTH TV services delivered through satellite has been on the rise. In fact, there has been a global outburst in this field.

Advantages of Digital Television

Digital Television channels take up lesser bandwidth when compared to that of analog TV. This is why digital broadcasters are able to provide:

  • Increased numbers of digital channels within the same space

  • High-definition TV service

  • Other non-television services like interactivity or multimedia

DTV or Digital Television features special services like:

  • Multiplexing (providing over one program on the same channel)

  • Electronic program guides

  • Additional languages whether spoken or subtitled

One other source of revenue is the retailing of non-television services.
