Easy Door Entry Phone System from Nortel

If you have Nortel phones installed in your office or place of work, then you could set up a unique door entry phone system. The door entry system, as routed through your existing phone system is basically an advanced form of entry telecom and door security system, which allows any nominated employee to admit visitors to the building right from his or her desk.

What are the advantages of using a door entry system like this? Well, when you work (or if you have ever worked) in an office or building where there is only a fixed door intercom, and no reception, you will undoubtedly have experienced that moment when the door rings and no one answers. Professionalism, ease of use, efficiency – they are all good reasons to invest in a door entry phone. And when you already have Nortel phones running in your office you almost don't need a reason. The door entry system automatically works with your setup – so it makes sense to have it.

It isn't that many small to medium sized businesses that use a reception area or receptionist any more. In most cases, there is no need to pay someone to receive visitors – and the old duties of a receptionist are long gone. People in small companies are expected to manage their own meetings and work schedules. As such, having a system where individual employees can activate the door locking mechanism from their own desks is very helpful.

Here's how it works. The door entry phone, which looks, to a user outside, exactly like a normal door intercom, is linked to all the Nortel phones in the system. The administrator of that system dictates which of the phones in the system are actively authorised to open the front door at any time. When someone comes to the door and presses the buzzer, all phones in the system that have authorisation to unlock the door, ring. You answer one, find out who is at the door, and press a button on your existing desk top handset keypad. And that's it. Simple. Your visitor enters and the door locks behind him or her.

The door entry phone has two main advantages. First, the overall efficiency of the company is given a better gloss in the eyes of visitors (who, after all, are usually clients, and whose impressions count); and second, security becomes controlled. You will be able to make a door access request ring straight through to a single phone, for example, which means that the person the visitor wishes to see can make direct identification of him or her before he or she is granted entrance.

Including a door phone capability in an existing Nortel phones system is extremely easy. If the door entry phone system sounds appealing to you and you do not have a Nortel system installed, it may also be reasonably easy to make the switchover.
