One of the neatest features of today's modern cell phones is the ability to get ringtones for them that you can download to your phone. You can associate a particular ring tone to specific callers so that you can tell who is calling without even looking at your phone, just by listening to the ringtone you have assigned to that caller.
Almost all cell phones have this ability today and the amount of creativity that cell phone owners are showing with the ring tones they have chosen is truly amazing. Think of how you could set that up on your phone. When your son calls from college, his assigned ringtone might be the song "Money", since you know that is what he is calling you to request. When your boss calls you, his ringtone might be the 70's rock song "Taking Care Of Business". There are several online services that allow you to download ringtones to your cell phone, but you need to be careful. Some of these organizations do not allow you to view their ring tone selection before you join for a fee, and after you have joined, you discover that their selection is severely limited.
With other services, you need to make sure that the format of the ringtones is something that your cell phone can actually play. For example, some older Sprint cell phones only allow ring tones in a proprietary Sprint format. Most of the newer cell phones allow you to download an MP3 format ringtone, which is the same format used on CD's and your Ipod, and you likely have a very large collection of "ring tone possibilities" in your music collection already.
Another thing to keep in mind is that there is a limited amount of memory in cell phones. But most of the newer cell phones allow a mini SD storage chip to be inserted into the cell phone, and that can be used to store literally hundreds of different ringtones that you may wish to use or assign to a specific caller.
The process of downloading a ring tone to your cell phone varies by the make and model of your cell phone. With some of them, you initiate the transfer of your selected ring tone online and it arrives to your cell phone as a text message, although the cell phone will recognize it as a ringtone and not really a text message. With some of the newer cell phones that can access the Internet, you surf to the Internet site, enter your ID, and download it directly to your cell phone from there.
With many of the newer cellular phones, the box included a cable that goes from the cell phone to your computer. With this cable, you can transfer ringtones directly from your computer into your cell phone, and then use that ringtone.
