Ever heard the song ‘It’s a small world’? As the song proclaims, it’s a small world after all; because really, we are all just people, people living in a small world. The song has never rang so true as it does today. The simple reason behind this is that we are now more connected than we have been ever before. It’s the technology. Today, you’re never more than a simple phone call or email or Skype chat or tweet away from your best buds and loved ones, no matter where they or you live. With high speed internet, and more specifically, satellite internet which is infinitely more forgiving (in terms of distances and location) than DSL, people are getting closer. The world has shrunk.
People who live oceans apart and thousands of miles away in distant lands can communicate with a simple touch of the mouse. A few clicks and they’re chatting via Gmail or teleconferencing using the latest online business apps. Satellite internet has made communication extremely easy. The fact of the matter is that satellite broadband goes where other high speed internet providers will not. It’s available in places that are untouched by other signs of modern technology like cell phones, fast food outlets and discount tire stores.
The set up is extremely simple too. To get connected via satellite broadband, all you really need is a satellite mini dish or receiver, a modem and a clear, unobstructed view of the southern sky. It’s akin to having a satellite TV connection. A professional installer will come and calibrate your dish, which is usually placed on the roof for best results. The satellite receiver is connected via coaxial cables to a special modem which is in turned connected to your computer or lap top. A wireless network can easily be set up from there so that multiple computers can work from one connection.
Up until recently, before satellite internet arrived on the scene, people living in more remote and rural areas weren’t able to get any internet connection other than dial up, which of course, is no where up to par with high speed internet. However, there was no other option. Now, however, satellite internet has changed the game. People living anywhere, from the remote forests of Borneo to the glistening green Everglades can easily get connected to the net courtesy of satellite broadband. And they’re always on. This means that scientists studying the flora of the Amazon rain forest can consult in real time with their colleagues in Leeds or Boston. A pianist in Germany can conduct a virtual master class with inner city kids in Brooklyn. A house wife living in the wilds of Wyoming can set up her own booming business with customers in Tokyo and Gibraltar right from the comfort of her home. The possibilities are endless. The internet connects us all.
