Mobile Number Portability or MNP in India – Some Facts

Posted: Dec 23, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

As we know that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recently launched MNP (Mobile Number Portability) in the Haryana state on 25th Nov 2010 and it will launch in across India very soon. This service will allow you to retain your mobile phone number when you want to shift your telecom operator. There are some facts that an individual must know about MNP.

MNP Technology
Mobile number portability is not an easy task such as pushing a button. You should need a lot for instance, expensive equipment, logistics on a mind-boggling scale, and as well as ensuring checks-and-balances by appointing a third-party company in order to carry out these operations on behalf of both (originating and destination) operators.

Verification of User Identity
For changing your telecom operator, this process will take 4 days time to complete. Many questions will be asked to you in this period. Have you submitted all the required documents three times – old operator, new operator or portability agency? Have you applied first at your prospective mobile operator or give a request for porting a number from your ex-operator?

Fear of an Operator
The so-called "incumbent" mobile telephony operators have been in the space for a long time. The numbers of dissatisfied mobile phone users are certainly in direct proportion. When new companies enter the mobile operator space, they have nothing to lose (at least at first) with MNP. Those operators who have been around longer, fear losing existing customers, with good reason. What's more, prized phone number sequences for instance, 98484 84848 can be lost to other operators, in place of returning to an operator's own pool of available numbers to hand-out.

Inter-states issues
In Mobile Number Portability, the issue is that you can't retain you number if you are planning to move from one state to another. Recently, the government of India only mentions MNP within a circle. Besides, there is also a lock in period of 90 days. That means, if you again want to change your operator, you have to wait for at least three months.

Identification Issue
Let's talk about landline phones. We can identify landline number by looking at the STD code. In the mobile phones, we can also identify a phone number's attributes as telecom operator and physical location. But after the implementation of Mobile number portability, it will become much harder for everyone to identify.
