India has undergone an IT revolution over the past decade thanks in the main to the availability of much cheaper telecommunications options and also the communications options offered by the internet.
Knowledge and business services can be traded across borders without the need for any movement of physical goods and many multinationals have found that the expertise available in India for corporate services such as accounting, payroll, IT support and other business services is far cheaper than in many other countries. As a result they have outsourced such services to companies in India that can handle their requirements and Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) is forecast to generate $60bn per year to the Indian economy by 2010.
Indeed, the services business is booming in India to such an extent that many workers of Indian descent based in the UK and the USA are now making their way back to the country in order to progress their careers. With a distinct head start in terms of cultural understanding, educated expatriates with extensive experience are also relocating their families to India to take advantage of a higher standard of living than they would experience elsewhere.
For their friends and family left behind it is now easy to get in touch with those who have returned, and making cheap calls to India is now the norm as many commercial organisations switch from traditional landline based telephony to internet based communications to contact departments and outsourcing companies based in the country. Similarly, families, friends and colleagues are also using such internet based communication to contact their peers in India.
Contacting India by messaging systems has been easy enough to do for the last five years by using computer-to-computer communication. But, now such internet-based providers are branching out into offering a seamless service between computer and phone. As a result it is now possible to ring a mobile or landline phone in India direct from a computer in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, providing it is contacted to broadband. There is a cost attached, but it will be far cheaper than using a mobile phone or even a fixed landline to call India direct. Selected internet phone providers also allow subscribers to obtain phone numbers issued in another country. For example if you live in India and subscribe to a UK number, friends and family from that country can ring you at your computer in India from their landline, saving them a considerable amount of money!
