SATCOM on the Move

Posted: Dec 29, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

SATCOM on the move is short version of satellite communications on the move. This is a mobile satellite technology closely related to the military vehicles. A vehicle equipped with SATCOM antenna can communicate with the satellite or spacecraft even when mobile. This is the main principle behind coinage of the term SATCOM on the move. This is an essential component of military warfare which requires mobile unit.

There are a number of benefits of employing this high capacity communication technology. Effectiveness of combat, lethality, and survivability are some to name a few. These benefits have made SATCOM on the move a crucial defense communication system. From being exclusive US military component, it surfaced as a commercial commodity and hence the commercial satellite industry emerged as a new sector.

While discussing SATCOM on the move, we often face a pertinent question- can SATCOM on the move, can communicate? Answer is yes. When a satellite revolves over the equator of the Earth, it has enough potential to transmit signals to the extremes of both north and south of a longitude. To sum up it can be said that when a satellite is hovering along any one longitude of the earth, the station on earth can receive data signals from any point on ground.

Undoubtedly, with SATCOM on the move the defense technology has taken a leap. But there are some potential challenges faced by this technology. On the basis of the technical specifications, there are different types of communications on the move antennas. The difference in specifications are pertaining to weight, size, radio frequency, protocols of the networking, data rate, and above all vehicle platform dynamics. These days a new challenge is faced by the manufacturers of the SATCOM enabled products for vehicles and it is the portability of the device. It is needless to mention most compact and lighter the device, better acceptability will it get.

Another challenge faced by communications on the move is the outage of radio frequency used for operating and connecting the device for a stretch of time. Hindrances can be caused due to unpleasant weather, lack of connectivity inside the tunnels, and so on. But if your SATCOM on the move device is powerful enough, it can resume operation once you are out of the obtrusion.

It's great fun to head out into the open, absolutely wild terrain; where there are no roads, no lights, and where the air's super fresh, super organic; full of all of the musk and particulates that we were all made to inhale and run through our nostrils. To be away from the city and urban areas in general, is a generally healthy thing. But practicalities reign, and whenever you do head out into the wild and open terrains, you have to plan for communications, such as Satcom on the move.
