Club Penguin is an online snow covered world containing a range of games and activities developed by Club Penguin Entertainment. Using penguins as characters, players waddle around, chat, play minigames and participate in other activities with one another in a snow-covered virtual world. After beta testing, Club Penguin was released to the general public where it was claimed that by 2007, Club Penguin had over 12 million penguins. Though free memberships are available, revenue is predominantly raised through paid memberships which allow penguins to access a range of additional features such as buying clothes, decorating your igloo, and much more! The success of Club Penguin led to New Horizon Interactive to be purchased by the Walt Disney Company for a sum of 700 million dollars.

Club Penguin is designed for children between the ages of 5 and 14 years old. A major focus of Club Penguin has been child safety. Currently, Club Penguin offers two different chat modes:

Standard Safe Chat - Penguins are free to generate their own messages and will be modded accordingly by mods. Penguins who cheat and swear will be banned from Club Penguin, usually by the Club Penguin bad word filter.

Ultimate Safe Chat - Penguins select their comments from a menu, filtering that prevents swearing and the revelation of personal information.

Some servers are ultimate safe chat only. Penguins who use ultimate safe chat servers are limited to certain phrases and words which are selected from a menu.

Club Penguin's number one focus is to keep the penguins of Club Penguin safe. So far they:

- Provide an "Ultimate Safe Chat" mode, which limits players to selecting phrases from a list.

- Use an automatic filter during standard safe chat mode which blocks out profanity.

- Employ moderators to help police and keep Club Penguin safe.

- Promote penguins to secret agents and encourage them to report bad behavior.

Penguins who break the Club Penguin rules will be punished as is for the offending abuse. Club Penguin currently judges bans by the following:

1. Penguins who swear and use profanity will be banned for 24 hours.
2. Penguins who cheat to improve their status will be banned for 72 hours, sometimes a forever ban may occur. (depending on how bad the offending abuse is)
3. Penguins with 4 or more bans will be banned forever, usually by a moderator.

Penguins who are banned forever are usually not unbanned. A parent or guardian are the only ones who can get a child's penguin unbanned, and sometimes, they can't either. It all depends on how bad the offending abuses are.
