How to Repair 3 Red Lights on Xbox360

Our company: Geeks in Minutes, has been repairing Xbox 360’s as well as computer repair for residential and commercial businesses in Massachusetts. At first it seemed like an exciting new venture for our company to step in the world of gaming. The bottom line is that we did not realize what we were getting ourselves into.

Our customers can attest to the fact that the Xbox 360 runs so hot that it's almost completely unsuitable for use in living rooms, and this problem no doubt contribute to the console's unreliability.

Our personal experience repairing these consoles is somewhat of a tragedy. We first began by conducting the reflow system. This involves baking the motherboard at high temperatures with a reflow machine to melt in all the soldering points. When the console overheats the soldering becomes weak and defective connections develop on the motherboard. The reflow process then includes letting the motherboard cool to reflow the points back into place. This seemed like a no brainer. An easy task and the console is repaired in no time. We would put everything back together and test is for a while and no problem, a working console. Here is the twist.  A happy gamer comes back to our shop to pick up his “fixed” console; dreaming of playing Halo 3 for hours. We would give our customers tips, like run an external fan blowing into your console for extra ventilation and play for only 2 hours at a time and then turn it off to let it cool down. The reality was that the console would last for a period of time, maybe a few weeks or maybe just a week. Then the same red ring would appear and we would have some furious gamer yelling at us through the phone asking us to perform miracles on their console.

When this same situation kept on occurring, we devised a new system that would hopefully relieve us from getting a bad reputation. The last thing we wanted was for our well established computer repair company to get a bad name from Xbox 360s. We ordered 120 volt box fans. We cut out a hole on the top of the console and installed these fans to create a cooling system. We still performed the reflow system, but added fans for more cooling. The problem is that the console generates so much heat inside, and it has nowhere to go. With the Xbox 360 design the way it is, the console practically generates enough heat to cook eggs. This seemed like our answer. The consoles were lasting longer with this new system. But even with this, consoles came back to our shop after a certain amount of time, maybe a month or maybe longer; it depends on the specific console. After much testing and headaches, we realized that there is a certain heat sensor chip inside the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) that goes bad on the motherboard. There is no way to repair the chip, only replace it which is impossible. One cannot buy the chip online. With this said and our company getting a bad reputation, we decided to cut out repairing Xbox 360s completely. The console is so flawed in terms of its design; it has no hope for permanent repair.

So what does the future hold for the Xbox 360? If the Xbox 360 fan base weren't as good as it is, I'd suggest just going with the PlayStation 3 because at least it is a better design. What's disappointing is that Microsoft has built an excellent gaming console with serious multimedia capabilities that's linked to a high-quality online service, giving gamers what amounts to the best overall experience in gaming today. Hopefully, a more reliable version of the console will be introduced to the market; otherwise it's game over for the Xbox 360.
