SC2 4v4 Team Game Strategy - Part 2 - Strategy
Ok This is part 2 of my 4v4 Team Game Strategy series. If you guys haven't read the first article, please go ahead and read it first. Well my main focus on this second part will be regarding the general Strategy for your 4v4 team games. Do take note, these series will be mostly pointing towards a 4v4 Arrange Team instead of 4v4 Random Team. For me personally, 4v4 Random Team is considered trash. I never ever trust my random allies and who knows what they will pull out? Defending themself with 5 cannons without even building a unit, mass expoing with no defence, hard teching to super late units eg Carriers, Void, Thors etc and the list goes on and on.
I will outline the general strategy being used for 4v4.
I) Deciding what Units you are getting
First and foremost whenever the game loads, pay attention to your opponents' races. Then, decide what unit combination you plan on getting that will work best in the matchup. Take for example, during the loading screen, you see three Zergs from your opponent. The first thing that comes into mind is probably Zergling rushes. If you are a Terran, get Marines and wall up your base. If you are a Protoss, wall up your base with a space for your Zealot to hold position. If you are a Zerg, you may consider putting up one or two Spine Crawlers, upon scouting. Normally when the game starts, tell your allies what units you plan to get. This goes for every member of the team. If you're going Zerglings, just type: Lings, 4 gates, marines, bio, dt for dark templar etc. This will give every member of the team idea on his allies strategies. Why play team games when there isn't teamwork?
II) Stating in game time when to push
You can always state a time for eg 5.00 minutes in game or 6.00 min for everyone of your allies to meet up during that time and push together. You wouldn't want to go alone and getting your ass whipped by 1v4. In general, as a protoss if your planning for a 4 Warpgate rush, the timing will be 5:30/45 ingame with constant chronoboosting on your warpgate upgrade. I personally only gets a Zealot and Stalker in between. Roach rushes can come as early as 5 minutes and 2 rax Marines too. You need to be familiar with your races in the first place.
III) Scout, Scout, Scout
I cant emphasize enough on scouting in Team games. I feel this is the most important part during the early part of the match whether is in solo 1v1, or 4v4 team games. Generally, Protoss will be the one doing the scouting after the 9th food Pylon. This is due to the nature of the Protoss race, where building doesn't require time as compared to Zerg or Terran. If there isn't Protoss on your team, get your Terran ally to do the scouting. What do you watch for when you scout. The first will always be the build order of your opponent. You want to see when does the Zerg puts up the Spawning Pool, if the Terran are getting any gas, which most terran on team games start with two barracks or Forge or Gateway from the Protoss. Pay close attention to scouting, and your team will try to counter their builds or at least prepare for whats coming. You wouldn't want to have a Probe sneaking into your base and starting building cannons in the fog.
III) Decide general Strategy
What do I mean here, is you can always have a member of your team teching hard in the game. Whether to Dark Templar, Banshees etc while the rest of your allies will do the defending part. 3 players getting early tier units+1 teching is generally good.
As for more aggresive builds, you can get every member to mass up low tier units such as; Marines, Zerglings, Zealots/Stalkers, Roaches, Marine Maruder and push early in the game. This strategy works perfectly on some maps where 2 allies are sharing a base. With four armies from your team, you can easily take down two of your opponents armies before reinforcement arrive.
You can try a 2v2 option where two allies will attack and takes on the top two opponents, while the bottom two takes on the others. This is a great strategy if you are confident in your skills.
IV) Scout, Scout, Scout part 2
I am not repeating myself here. I am emphasizing on the importance for map control. This can be easily done with Overlords to gain visions from high ground. A few well placed overlord can have a good map control. This can also be done by using Zerglings or workers on Zel Naga towers. After the initial scouting had been done you will most likely tell the location and races of your opponents. Probably after some time has passed, you can scout again poking the front of their bases. This works best by sending a Zergling at the front of their bases and you can tell when they are moving out.
V) Synergy
I have talked about synergy on my previous article. This is a really important factor. You would not want every member of your allies getting Marines only if you have four Terrans. Try getting units that synergize with each other. For example a Protoss wishes to get mass Speed Zealots, you can always go for mass Stalkers instead of both of you getting the same units. If your allies are going for mass marines try to get some meatshields for him whether Roaches, Zealots etc.
VI) Teamwork
Team work in the sense of say; your ally is requesting for Gas and seriously needing them. Always send him your gases. If he requires minerals to rebuild a base, send it to him if you feel that your not needing the extra minerals. Resources sharing is important. Say for example, you and one of your ally has been rushed down by four of your opponent. You may think what can be the best option here. The best option here is to try to die as slow as possible. LOL. Buy as much time for your allies to build up a huge army or higher tech as most of the time, for eg dieing to Proxy Rax/Gateways with 6 or 8 pool. Feed all your resources to them if you can't rebuild. At times where you manage to escape with your workers and the get up a main again. DO NOT WASTE on rebuilding your barracks etc. Just pump up workers and feed the rest to your allies. It takes too much time and a pure waste to rebuild from ground. To determine this, you need experience when to feed or rebuild.
Finally these are all the points I will point out on this part. Do stay tuned for the next part. Enjoy
