Second Life Land: The Pros & Cons of Openspace Sims by Lizard Howl

I have written before about Openspace sims. These new islands of Second Life land are going to be very popular in the next few weeks and months. The new pricing structure that Linden Labs has come up with means that these Openspace sims will soon be *everywhere* in Second Life!

In case you don’t already know, what the Lindens are calling Openspace Sims are basically a full sim, with the prim allotment of a ¼ sim. It is a 65536m2 region, with 3750 prims. This makes them great for anyone who wants privacy or who needs a lot of space but not a lot of prims. Retailers, business people, people who are in hiding, everyone will be buying or renting these Openspace Sims.

One thing that a lot of Estate Owners have been doing is taking the sim and terraforming it into a little island. This is great if you like sailing, boating, or just like having open water around your land. If you join a bunch of them together you can basically create your own boater’s paradise, and many people have done just that. You will see one Openspace Sim after another all stuck together in a long chain.

The big disadvantage of the Openspace Sims is that there are four sims per standard server. In other words, if you have bought or are renting an Openspace Sim, there are three other sims that will affect the performance of your sim. This wouldn’t be so bad except you don’t have any way of knowing who owns the other three sims, where they are on the grid, or what kind of things people are doing there. You could have a tiny house, no scripts, and debug your sim every day, yet still find out that your own sim suffers from horrible lag!

I think this is going to be a very common complaint with these Openspace Sims. Think about it for a moment - if you want an Openspace Sim, chances are you don’t want anyone telling you what to do with your land right? That means there are going to be hundreds if not thousands of people basically abusing their sims. They will run the worst scripts you can imagine, conduct illegal business, shoot off colliders, there is no telling what can happen!

If you really need to have the privacy, you are probably better off renting or buying a ¼ sim in a No Covenant Estate or a similar sized piece of Mainland. Restrict access to the sim to the people you want, and get either Linden Labs or the Estate Owner involved if you notice poor sim performance.

I hope this article helped you understand the pros and cons of the Second Life Land known as Openspace sims.

See you in world.
