It's Not About "The Economy" - It's About Balance
Too many people right now think that you have to have the top & best economy in the game to win. While this is true in the "late late game," for the most part, in the mid-game you really want to strike a balance of economy and military.
For instance, if you have a TON of resource gatherers, and you have a TON of resources, what good is it going to do you if you can't defend your base? Not very much. If you have a ton of resources just sitting there then it's way better to manifest it into something useful, such as units, technology, or units. Don't let it add up for no reason - you will just die with all those resources unspent, which is the "dumbest" way to lose.
Keep A Steady Flow of Resources Coming In
You should always have your gatherers getting gas and minerals, and you should never have them idle. Explore the map to make sure that it's safe in the more distant regions and keep on expanding your base to account for where they are. As you grow your resources will add up which lets you really get very powerful - but again - do NOT forget about your military.
