Just recently, at the yearly E3 conference, Sony plugged what they are marketing as the Sony Playstation Eye. Ring any bells? You could be thinking back to Sony's EyeToy, a add-on used on the Playstation 2 that pioneered the identification of the real time movements of the gamer. The Eye expands on this concept in some very fascinating ways, although they are not completely unseen ones. However, it is very hard to fathom just to what extent this product will truly affect the console world, if it does.
For those that missed the Electronic Entertainment Expo, perhaps the key functions of Sony Playstation Eye is the motion sensing. How this sensing is captured is through the regnition of the glowing orb at the tips of the control designed for the Eye. Sony's producers moved forward to offer a live performance of the Playstation Eye's possibilities, utilizing the remote to correspond with a 3D interface inside the TV screen and revealing just how the could be added to genres like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and even action. Every movement a gamer creates with the remote control is mirrored onscreen with 1 to 1 accuracy.
However, doesn't that sound familiar? During the previous Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo accomplished the exact same thing with their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. It also recognises and mirrors actions at one to one accuracy. The only significant distinction involving the separate peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye demands an improved version of their EyeToy camera to follow the remotes, while Nintendo's Wii Motion Plus connects to an out-of-the-way sensor bar wirelessly. If anything, Sony's latest attempt appears not so advanced in light of the year old technology of Nintendo.
Although following in the footsteps of existing ideas, the Eye stays an excellent offering of hardware that is certain to bring pleasure to most fans of the PlayStation 3. Though it can't greatly alter the landscape of gaming entirely, the Sony Playstation Eye accomplishes a step forward for Sony's credibility, and could perhaps help them gain ground in regard to innovation.
