Choosing a class, race,and name may seem like a fairly simple task, but in the end it is all about investment. You can merely pick the first class that comes to mind, then use the default name generator and be on your merry way. But what fun is that? In order to get the most out of your game play, you will need to consider your playing style. What is it that you want from a character? What does each class offer and what race suits you best?
It is ideal to choose what class you will play and then decide what race and faction you will play, as not all classes are available on every race. If you don't already have a class in mind, take a moment and think about your playing style. Are you one who likes to be up close in combat? Are you one who prefers to hang back and protect your group? Or do you like the idea of ranged DPS?

Each class offers something different. Mages and Warlocks are cloth wearing characters. While their armor isn't high, they have the ability to do massive damage with their spells. Warriors, Death Knights, and Paladins make great tanks and do a great deal of damage. Druids (in certain forms) and Rogues offer back up tanking or primary DPS in groups.
The best way to decide what class is best for you is to try a few different ones. You can have up to ten characters per realm. Play what feels right, not what is popular.
Once you are in your race's starting zone, you will be able to identify quest givers by the yellow exclamation points that are over their heads. Once you accept the quest, it will be marked on your map with a number that corresponds to your quest. You will also be able to track your quests progress through the quest tracker located on the right of your screen. Once you have completed your quest, a yellow question mark will appear over the intended quest target.
As you finish quests, you will gain experience. This allows you to level. Every 2 levels starting at level 2, you will need to visit your class specific trainer to learn new skills. Sometimes the trainers will also give you class specific quests. You can locate your trainer in major cities (and in some smaller towns) by asking a guard. Once you ask the guard, a marker will appear on your map, guiding you to the location.
Once you hit level 10, you will start to get talent points every time you level. These talent points allow you to choose your characters specialization path. Keep in mind that, while you can unlearn your talents and choose a new path at any time, it will cost gold to do so. And each time you change your mind the more gold it will cost.
You will have to walk nearly everywhere until you reach level 20. Once you are level 20 you will get the chance to learn riding and purchase a mount that will allow you to travel faster.
The best way to learn World of Warcraft is to just play. With new adventures and new content awaiting you, the dynamics are always changing.
