An Introduction to Digital Light Processing Televisions

Posted: Dec 08, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

Over the years, technology has advanced so much that the improvements are mind staggering. One of the newest and best advances that has so many people excited is digital light processing. Invented in 1987, digital light processing has transformed the way that many items used for the home, school, and business are manufactured. TVs are one of these.

DLP (digital light processing) technology implements the use of numerous microscopic mirrors through optical semiconductors to create amazing images. Digital light processing (DLP) TVs are available in one-chip and three-chip models. One-chip televisions can portray more than 16 million colors, while the three-chip televisions can portray more than 35 trillion colors.

However, currently, the market is primarily providing one-chip models for smaller sets and reserving three-chip sets for large screen projects such as movie theaters, business settings. Three-chip DLP TVs are higher-end models and therefore, they are more costly.

What sizes are digital light processing (DLP) TVs sold in?

Digital light processing (DLP) TVs are sold in a variety of screen sizes that typically range from 44 inches to 65 inches. There's a lot of TV to these models. Unfortunately, DLP televisions are a bit heavy, similar to other models of televisions. Typically, they weigh somewhere between 60 pounds and a bit more than 200 pounds. However, most models fall somewhere in the low to middle range of weights.

What are the good points about DLP TVs?

For years, plasma screen televisions have been touted as the kings of the television world. However, digital light processing televisions also have many fine features and just might move up into that throne. The features that you can get vary somewhat depending on the specific model of DLP TV that you purchase.

Typically, a DLP screen will last longer than a plasma screen, yet it lasts about the same amount of time as an LCD television set.

Plasma televisions have been noted to experience a "burn in" effect when a still image is left on the screen for an extended period. Unfortunately, the image becomes "burned in" on the screen. DLP TVs do not experience "burn in."

Although some questions still exists, some television viewers believe that the picture quality of a DLP TV is superior to that of a plasma television. However, there are those viewers who believe that the LCD television actually has a brighter picture.

DLP TVs are said to provide better performance for video games that move quickly or for quickly moving sports. This is most likely due to the fact that DLP televisions are know to have higher refresh rates.

What options do DLP TVs have?

Available features might include digital cable card slots, built-in HD-tuners, HD-compatibility, and a HDMI or DVI connection.

Parental controls are also options that are available on some models.

Good warranties are available, so get one and your mind will rest easier.

Potential cons against the DLP TC

The one-chip versions have been noted to have a rainbow effect in some cases. Although not every viewer has observed this effect, it has occurred in some instances. However, the rainbow effect is a mildly annoying aspect that occurs infrequently and usually when the picture on the screen is portraying an array of white or lightly colored objects against a dark background.

How to decide which digital light processing (DLP) TV to purchase

Consumers should make their decision to purchase a new television based upon the features that are most important to them. They can opt to observe the screen images for several different models themselves.
