Canon PIXMA MX320 Review
The Canon PIXMA MX320 has got the now familiar style with an angled surround at the top, into where the control panel is placed. In the middle of the surround is the ADF, including a fold-over feed tray, that helps the machine's already tidy design.
There is only a single paper feed path from the fold-up support at the rear on the within the machine's front cover, which in turn folds down to be an output tray. In a ingenious small new development, Canon rigs this specific front cover to drop down automatically, in the event you neglect to open it before beginning to print.
The user interface is effectively presented, with three big setting buttons at the left as well as black and colour copy buttons on the right. In between there's a fax number pad and a two-line by 16-character mono Liquid crystal display screen.
Whilst there's no colour LCD display, nor memory card slots, you do get a single USB socket at the lower right of the front panel, that doubles as a PictBridge feed for digital camera models. You may also apply it in order to scan right to a USB drive, which is a handy extra.
The flatbed scanner device utilizes a Contact Image Sensor (CIS), but nevertheless provides relatively good black and colour page images. At the rear are sockets for a fax line as well as for a phone handset, plus a single USB data connection. There's no Ethernet socket since, even though the MX320 is intended for small business, it is still devised for a single desk.
Both PG-510 ink cartridges, one black and the other tri-colour, clip in the print head carrier, after you lift up the scanner section of the machine and rest it on the blue 'bonnet support' which in turn springs down.
Speed claims have come down to far more realistic amounts due to the development of the ISO test standard, and thus Canon now offers 7.5ppm for black print and 4.5ppm for colour. The 5-page black text print required 58 seconds, which totals to 5.17ppm in addition, on the extended, 20-page document this goes up slightly to 6.06ppm.
The five-page text and colour graphics print just gave 2.23ppm, conversely, not even half the publicized figure. Photograph prints came through fairly rapidly, with a 15 x 10cm picture at high-quality taking 1:34 and a similar photograph, in normal quality from a PictBridge digital camera, needed a fairly zippy 57 seconds.
Text print quality is nice, although we did notice just a little fuzziness around emboldened characters in printed headlines. Colour business graphics are generally pretty bright, although a bit of dithering is noticeable. Black text registration is nice.
Photograph prints, regardless of this device being primarily directed at business, are superb, consisting of even colour gradations as well as plenty of fine detail in light and dark areas of a picture. Colours look genuine and this particular device is very capable of printing off pictures at a great home standard.
Canon promises a noise level of 47dBA, however, if copying and feeding paper we measured it at highs of 66dBA. That is pretty loud for an inkjet device but, as customary, it is the paper feed not the print system that produces this noise.
The two ink cartridges are the lone consumables for this all-in-one and because of its targeted market, it is reasonable not to get separate colour ink cartridges. There are two obtainable capacities with regard to the black and tri-colour cartridges.
The Canon PIXMA MX320 provides benefits for many home office functions additionally, the integration of the ADF and fax facilities continues to be very useful in transferring paper documents swiftly. Print quality is alot more than sufficient regarding common use and even though colour prints may be a tad lethargic, black print draws near the headline figure. Operating costs are on the high side, though, which is really a pity.
