Shoppers who are considering purchasing a new front load washer and dryer set have three options when it comes to how they will set up and arrange their new appliances. The first step is to measure the space in your laundry area to decide how much room you will have. Keep in mind, some older homes that have only laundry closets may not be big enough for the standard washers and dryers on the market, and the high efficiency front loaders will be an even tighter fit. Measuring will keep you from buying your dream laundry set only to find it doesn't fit in your home.
Typically, washers and dryers are positioned side by side, according to where the water lines and power outlet are located. This is a good option if you don't have a lot of extra room in your laundry area. Consider however, that you will have to bend down when loading and transferring laundry from the washer to the dryer. This configuration is ideal for those without shelving units in their laundry area as the tops of both the washer and dryer will be at a convenient height for storing detergent and other laundry supplies.
Another option, available for most front load washers and dryers, is to purchase pedestals for your machines. These pedestals are available as a separate purchase in matching colors to give your washer and dryer a streamlined look. They will raise your washer and dryer to a more comfortable height for loading and transferring your laundry. As an added benefit, the pedestals are drawers for added storage. The pedestals will secure to the bottom of your washer and dryer with the included hardware. As the appliances are very heavy, two people will be required to lift and place the machines on top of the pedestals.
Finally, if you have higher ceilings, and wish to conserve space, you may opt to stack your front load washer and dryer. The dryer will have to be situated on top of the washer, as it is lighter. Stacking kits are a must if you wish to use this configuration. These kits secure the dryer to the top of the washer so that the dryer will not fall off from the vibrations when in use. Stacking kits are available for most front loaders. They do require some tools to install (usually just a screwdriver). To ensure safety, it is important to have two people available to lift the dryer on top of the washer.
As you can see, there are a variety of configurations for front load washers and dryers. After measuring your space, consider which option best suits your needs and make sure to purchase the appropriate accessories to accommodate your choice. Do not forget to ensure that your dryer vent hose and power cords will be long enough to support whatever set up you choose. For gas appliances, the gas line is also a consideration when placing your washer and dryer. In some areas, a professional installer is needed for gas appliances, so check the requirements in your area.

Whilst there is no definitive answer, as each person's needs are different, the answer has probably changed from 90% NO to 90% YES. The reason for this is the narrowing gap between desktop and laptop computers in terms of performance, reliability and storage capacity.
