Enable The Detection Of IP address Conflicts

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 |
Setting up DHCP scopes is not all that you have to do when deploying a DHCP solution. In fact, you'll need to activate detection of IP address conflicts before starting leasing IP address to your DHCP clients. To activate the detection of IP address conflicts, do the following actions:

Step 1: Click on Start, click on Settings, click on Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, and then double-click on DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP.

Step 3: Click on a valid DHCP server.

Step 4: In the Action menu, click on Properties.

Step 5: Click on the Advanced tab.

Step 6: In Conflict detection attempts, enter a number which is higher than 0 and lower than 6, and then click on OK. Keep in mind that this number specifies the number of times where the DHCP server tests an IP address before allocating it to a DHCP client.

Once the number of attempts for conflict detection is defined, the DHCP server uses the Ping (Packet Internet Groper) networking tool to test IP available addresses of a specific scope before including them in the DHCP lease offers for the DHCP clients. In addition, if the Ping attempt succeeds, then that means that the IP address is already used by a DHCP client on the network. As a result, the DHCP server cannot assign the current IP address in a lease offer to a DHCP client. If the Ping attempt fails, that means that the IP address is not used on the network. In this case, the DHCP server can offer this IP address in a lease offer to a DHCP client.
Bear in mind that each new attempt to detect a conflict adds a delay to the response time of the DHCP server. This process increases the load on the DHCP server. Therefore, try to choose set the number of attempts to 1 or 2.
