Google Has Introduced Its Very Own Programming Language Known As 'Go'

Posted: Mar 16, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Developers claim that the language makes them more productive than while using any other language out there today. Because the code is compiled almost instantly, but runs at the same speed as C, Go outdoes the other languages currently in use. Although it has not yet been used in any publically available Google applications, Google programmers state that it is created to meet their application's needs of reaching a large user base running parallel programs on the side.

Go was not even developed as a planned Google project, but rather was conceived by Google developers on their own time, which the company allows them to work on projects outside their normal responsibilities. Reports indicate that Go will be used in the new Google operating system, Chrome. Go is the 2nd of Google's programming languages, the first being SIMPLE, which was a BASIC coding language designed for programming Android applications.

Open Source Software & Democracy

The backbone of democracy is a fair election in which citizens are allowed, and encouraged, to vote for the candidate of their choice. In the year 2000 election of the United States, this was a hot topic as paper votes were misleading vote-counters and not all votes were counted. Open source software could be the savior for democracy to be able to count all votes from now on. Existing voting software systems have been prone to miscounting and being infected with viruses by hackers.

But now an open source voting software has been introduced, and major players such as IBM and Oracle have promised to contribute code. The problem in the past has been low quality machines by for-profit vendors only interested in increasing sales at the cost of quality vote counting machines. However, with major players helping to create a functioning product at no profit, the chance for a legitimate voting machine is around the corner. The fact that companies would be doing this not for profit but for the sake of the voter, reassures citizens that their vote would efficiently and accurately be counted during an election, hoping to avoid what happened in the 2000 presidential election, where the winner was so ambiguous that announcements went back and forth.

A problem currently posed by voting software is that it must be approved by the federal government and local election officials have lost faith in the government's ability to decide what is right and what is wrong. This has become a loss of faith on both sides of the aisle, now that the democrats are not the only ones to complain about losing a vote.

Electronic voting may always leave a feeling of distrust and there's room for tampering, however it is not more than paper votes, and would hopefully be more mechanical than human counting methods, and also leave less or no room for error. The human error and judgment factor in the 2000 election was what caused many to believe that it was a rigged or at least fraudulent election.

But is every problem best solved using technology? Perhaps a machine is less likely to make an error, but even the trail is kept by the same machine which will not be quick to reveal those errors. One advantage could be to help the disabled in voting without human assistance, and certainly makes the process faster. So who is more trustworthy, the citizens who count the votes? Or a computer? Who knows.
