GPS Care

Posted: May 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

GPS units have soared in popularity over the past few years, and they can now be found in many cars. Some people say that they really could not live without one now, but even those people would admit that they wish they encountered less problems with their GPS. Common problems encountered with GPSs are normally down to the owner, and not any inherent fault in the unit, so the good news is that most can be avoided if you know how.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping your GPS in good condition and running like new for many years to come...

- Temperature

When you leave your car, you should take your GPS with you, or at least put it in the glove compartment. During the summer, temperatures inside a car can easily reach over 120 degrees. In the winter time, depending on where you live, the internal temperature of your car can get below the freezing point.

Temperatures such as these cause all sorts of problems in a GPS. Actually this is only problem if you bought your GPS separately from your i.e. it is not installed directly in to the dashboard. The reason being that pre-installed GPSs are specifically made to withstand extreme temperatures.

- Battery

GPS unit batteries tend to be fairly delicate. Any kind of power surge will probably ruin it. In some cases, power surges may travel through the battery into the actual GPS unit. Therefore, you should not have your GPS unit plugged in to the power outlet when starting up your car.

When you start your car, a small power surge goes through all of the outlets in your car. Over time, these power surges will wear out your GPSs battery. At the very least, this means that you will have to buy a new battery sooner than you would otherwise have to.

- Screen

Probably the most common complaint about GPS units is that various problems with the screen arise after using it for over 6 months. People either say that the touch screen is not as sensitive as it had been, or that the screen has lost it's brightness.

There is an easy way to avoid these issues. All you need is a basic screen protector, which will set you back no more than $20. A protector keeps the dirt that builds up on your fingers away from both the GPS screen and touch receptors under the screen.

- Processor

Whenever your GPS is turned on, the processor will continue to work. Most people think that leaving it on is no big deal, after all, the battery when will not run out as it is plugged in, but whenever it is on it is constantly in contact with the various GPS satellites.

So, switch it off as soon as you arrive at your destination, or as soon as you no longer need directions. You really can extend the lifespan of your GPS by years if you make the effort (all 2 seconds off it) to switch off your GPS when you are not using it.

Various types of radionavigation aids exist, and for the purpose of this text they can be categorized as either ground-based or space-based. For the most part the accuracy of ground-based radionavigation aids is proportional to their operating frequency. Highly accurate systems transmit at relatively short wavelengths and the user must remain in line-of-sight range, whereas the systems broadcasting at lower frequencies (larger wavelengths) are not limited to line-of-sight but are less accurate.
