How spam works and how IT Support can get it under control

In this article I will explain to you how spam works and how you can avoid it without potentially missing important emails.

The officially accepted definition of spam is an email message that is both unsolicited and sent in bulk.

Spam Has Drastically Increased...

Nowadays spam can come in so many forms that it’s a part of life, everything from mobile spam to IM (instant messaging) spam, online game spam to the one we all know – email spam.

It is something we have become used to but it doesn’t have to be like that.

I have had my hotmail account since 1998 and barely noticed spam back then but steadily the numbers have grown and nowadays billions and billions of spam emails are sent every day.

Take my advice....

To avoid as much spam as possible you need to make sure you’re not an easy target. This means avoiding putting your email address on your website and not using your address in forums.

The reason this is the best piece of advice is because spammers use software robots aka ‘bots’ that trawl the web picking up addresses from websites. Also keep your eyes peeled for the ‘already ticked’ boxes saying you will happily receive emails from 3rd parties.

It’s always best to use 2 email addresses. Ask your IT Support to set up two for each person in your department. I have the same prefix but one with .com and one with .co.uk the latter I use for all my non personal bits and pieces like ordering online, for iTunes and on sites like FaceBook and YouTube.

Do you have an active filter....? Ask your IT Support to set one up for you.

The first ever spam email was sent on May 3rd 1978 by a man called Carl Gartley who was actually sending it on behalf of his friend Gary Thuerk.
