How To Change The Preference Levels For Routing Sources

Posted: Feb 07, 2011 |
When you choose dynamic IP routing as a routing method, IP routing information will be exchanged using IP routing protocols such as Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and Routing Information Protocol (RIP). These last two protocols are the most used for Intranets. However, OSPF can be used on Internet Service Providers' network including thousands of routers. As you know, you can setup several routing protocols on the same router. Therefore, this router may learn multiple routes to the same subnet from different routing protocols. In this case, the router will choose the route learned the privileged source based on preference levels configured on your Windows Server 2003 device.

On Windows Server 2003, the preferred routing protocol represents the trusted source of the route added to its routing table, regardless of the metric value of the learned route. To change the preference levels for routing sources on Windows server 2003 operating system, read the following instructions:

Step 1: Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the Routing and Remote Access MMC, click on Routing and Remote Access.

Step 3: Click on the name of your server.

Step 4: Click on IP Routing

Step 5: Click on General

Step 6: Click with the right button of your mouse on General, and then click on Properties.

Step 7: Under the tab "Preference Levels", click on a route source, and then click either Move Up or Move Down to change the preference level of the protocol.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.
