How To Setup Credentials Used For DNS Dynamic Updates

Posted: Feb 14, 2011 | Views: 101 |
A DHCP service deployed Windows Server 2003 can activate the dynamic DNS updates in the DNS name space for each of its DHCP clients supporting this type of updates. The DHCP clients can use the protocol of dynamic DNS updates to refresh the information of mapping a DNS name to the host-address (stored in the DNS server's zones) as soon as modifications are made at their addresses assigned by DHCP server. Read the following actions to setup credentials used DNS dynamic updates:

Step 1: Click on Start, click on Settings, click on Control Panel, double-click on Administrative Tools, and then double-click on DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP.

Step 3: Click on a valid DHCP server.

Step 4: In the tab "Action", click on Properties.

Step 5: In the Properties dialog box of the current DHCP server, click on the Avanced tab, and then click on Credentials. The dialog box "DNS dynamic update credentials" displays.

Step 6: In DNS dynamic update credentials, enter the necessary information to provide credentials which will determine the owner of DNS record, and then click on OK.

If provided user identification information belongs to an object (a computer, for example) being a member of the security group "DnsUpdateProxy", the next object to register the same domain name record in DNS will become the owner of the DNS. Moreover, if you entered the credentials (username, domain, and password) that will be used by the DHCP server in the registration process of DHCP client devices in DNS, these credentials will not be backed up with either synchronous or asynchronous backup. Once the database of your DHCP server is restored, then new credentials have to be configured.
