How To Speed Up Your Computer In 5 Easy Steps
Is your computer taking longer to power on and off than it used to? Does it sometimes freeze, take longer for pages to load up or respond? If you answered yes then here are a few tips which should make it run faster.
Step 1 - Be sure to close out any programs that are running. You then begin by pressing CTRL, ALT & DEL buttons simultaneously on your PC or laptop keyboard; this will bring up the Windows Task Manager. You will then notice as the task manager comes up that to the left hand, bottom side of it is a list of numbers. These numbers tell you exactly how many processes are running on your PC or laptop's background. You should have about 33 to 42 of them depending on the number of programs and software you have installed on it. Anything more than 42 may very well be one of the reasons why your computer is running a lot slower than it used to. You can leave it alone or close it out.
Step 2 - For our next step you will want to hit 'start' and then choose 'run'. You will now type "msconfig" on the box that appears as you make sure you leave out the quotes. Next you hit enter. Now this will bring up your computer's system configuration utility window which has a few tabs on it. Hover your mouse across and click on the fifth tab labeled 'start-up'. Now you will be presented with a list which contains all the programs installed on your PC or laptop. Any program that has a check mark on it means that it starts each and every time your computers is started; thus the reason for the PC being slow. Most of these programs DO NOT need to be starting up each time your system starts since they take up unnecessary RAM and memory. Now you can scroll down to see if you can spot any software you may have recently added. You can simply uncheck each one (Programs such as MSN messenger, Yahoo, Skype and so on) will be here. Uncheck the ones you do not need and press apply. **Please note that if you are unsure of any program then simply ignore it and leave it alone** Immediately after doing this you will get a message informing you that your system needs to be restarted in order for the changes to take effect. Click on yes and your computer will reboot. Once your PC has powered back on you will get a window message reminding you of the changes you have made. You will click on the OK button, check the box that says "Do not show me again" and close it.
Step 3 - This next step bring us to the part of cleaning out your computer's browsing history, recycle bin, cookies and or any other files your PC no longer needs. You will press Start, Programs and then choose Accessories, System tools and then pick "Disk Clean-up" This may take several minutes depending on the last time this was done and how much browsing history you have stored. Be sure to check a box which says "Compress old files" as well. This will prolong the cleaning process but at the same time your PC will end up gaining more space and give you complete and maximum clean-up.
Step 4 - Again we press Start, Programs, Accessories and the System Tools folder and then choose "Disk Defragmenter. As I mentioned before, depending on the last time this was done, you will need to be patient as it may take between 5 to 15 minutes. Do note that in order for this utility to work you need to have at least 15% to about 25% of free disk space.
Step 5 - This next step will involve getting rid of files you have no idea or way of deleting. Programs such as Registry Cleaner, Defrag or CCleaner are good programs that will deep clean your computer's registry. It is here that many programs remain behind even after you have un-installed them. You should also get a program called Spybot to remove any spy-ware you may have. I recommend a program called Zone alarm which has tools to detect and remove any virus and spy-ware you may have, as well as offer you complete firewall protection. You will also get IM security, Identity protection along with many other security features. This program will even prevent your browser from entering sites which may contain viruses or harmful files that will cause damage to your computer.
Keep in mind that you should not download and run any programs you get from the Internet without an anti-virus/anti-spyware program in place. Most of this software is easy to install but almost impossible to remove and will always cause your PC or laptop to run slower. The great thing about installing a good Internet security program is that it will inform you what exactly a program is trying to do to your PC the minute you install it. You can then choose how much access and privileges to grant each program and what level of trust it can have. This in turn will give you complete protection and maximum control of your computer. Hope this makes your PC or laptop run faster.
