How To Unauthorize A DHCP Server in Active Directory

Posted: Feb 08, 2011 |
Un-authorizing a DHCP server in Active Directory is a simple task that you can accomplish by completing the following actions:

Step 1: Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP

Step 3: In the Action menu, click on Manage authorized servers and the dialog box "Manage authorized servers" will appear.

Step 4: In authorized DHCP servers, select the DHCP server that you need to be prohibited.
Step 5: Click on Unauthorize.

Keep in mind that when you prohibit a DHCP server in Active directory, this DHCP server ceases answering the DHCP requests of the hosts. Additionally, if the unauthorized DHCP server the only one in your network, then the DHCP clients will not be able to obtain any more IP addresses via DHCP.

To unauthorize a DHCP server in Active Directory, you must first of all be connected as a member of the Administrators security group of AD domain where the DHCP server were added. Moreover, before installing and configuring DHCP for your network, take in account that the number of users which can manage service DHCP must be as restricted as possible. As you know, you must be member of the Administrators group or the group of DHCP Administrators in order to manage DHCP servers through the DHCP MMC (Microsoft Management Console) or the Netsh commands for DHCP. Moreover, only members of the Admins group of the domain can authorize or prohibit a DHCP server in Active Directory. Try to limit the membership to these groups to a minimal number of users necessary to manage the DHCP server. If certain users need a read-only access to the DHCP console, then add them to the DHCP users group and not to the DHCP Administrators group.
